You seek out justice by your own means and have a code of ethics that you live by. The Vigilante is often loved by the common folk, hated by the nobility and their guards, and sometimes creates unnecessary chaos and violence, but is ultimately a force for good and change. You're a whirlwind of destruction and apathy, operate in moral gray areas frowned upon by those who uphold the law, and will go to any length to achieve your goals. For you, the difference between justice and revenge is rarely distinguishable. You are cloaked in a thin veil of heroism, barely covering a dark past full of horrible experiences that drive you to better the world around you.
- Skill Proficiencies: Intimidation, Stealth
- Tool Proficiencies: Disguise kit, Thieves’ tools, and either your choice of Alchemist's supplies or Tinker's tools
- Equipment: Thieves' tools, a crowbar, a set of dark common clothes including a hood or mask, a set of clothes fitting your station that lets you blend into society, a notebook containing information on evil-doers and a pouch containing 30 gp.
So you have decided to take the law into your own hands. Maybe you are driven by a personal vendetta, or a frustration with incompetent authority figures, or maybe your own code of ethics and honor is too strong to meekly submit to the law. Every vigilante has their own origin story. But something happened that set you on this path where both the law and the lawless are your enemy. Choose or randomly determine an origin story that turned you into a morally gray hero of the people.
d8 | Origin Story |
---|---|
1 | Death in the Family- A family member or loved one was murdered in a crime that went unsolved/the perp got off easy. You swore that no one would go through this again. |
2 | Friendly Neighborhood Hero- You're just sick of being mugged every day. Someone should clean this place up and the city guard won't do it. |
3 | A Philanthropist of a Different Sort- You were born into privilege but even with all your money you couldn't stop the injustices in your city against those who were weak. So you took an unorthodox approach. |
4 | By the Goddess- You were commanded by divinity to enact justice in the streets. Every criminal put away is an offering to your god. |
5 | Nothing to Lose- Some think you are insane. Maybe you are. Or maybe you can just hear your clock of mortality ticking a little louder than everyone else. Either way, you've got nothing to lose and time to kill in a world full of crime and corruption. |
6 | Redemption- You used to be bad but now you're good, which is good for the city and bad for your former colleagues. |
7 | Fry the Fat Cats- You've seen one too many scenes of the rich and noble flaunting their wealth while in the background peasants live in filth and die of starvation. Enough is enough. |
8 | Great Power, Greater Responsibility- You have been imbued with a power few beings even hope to possess. You can't sit by and watch tragedy strike whilst knowing you have the ability to stop it. Guards and soldiers have limits, and that's where you step in. |
The Vigilante is known for unconventional tactics and guerrilla warfare, relying on powerful explosives and cunning traps to take your enemies off guard and add some excitement to combat. You are are an expert at crafting explosives and trap making. In order to craft an explosive or trap, you must make a check using your Alchemist's supplies or Tinker's tools (for explosives and traps respectively), and meet or exceed a DC set by your DM based on difficulty. Traps and explosives should be themed for the setting and you must have the proper materials for crafting. Materials can be found throughout the world, but finding certain materials can be rare. It is up to you and your DM to determine how hard it would be to find the right materials, and what the damage scale of the explosives would be.
Suggested Characteristics
Vigilantes may seem to have a tendency to be loose cannons, or outlaws with little-to-no moral compass, but underneath their hardened, somewhat violent exterior, they hold on dearly to a respect for life and all living beings. They try their best to be stoic, disinterested, and maintain a neutral demeanor, but sometimes they let their compassion and understanding slip through the cracks of their somewhat cynical surface.

Vigilantes aren't always about violence and chaos. Your true goal is to better the world and do what is best for the greater good, which means living a life of constant moral gray areas. Instead of the access and knowledge of violent contraptions, the Vigilante can opt to be a being of the people. Since your actions serve a greater purpose and you mean well overall, even though you operate outside of the law, guards and soldiers will sometimes look the other way on actions deemed unlawful. As a being of the people, the common folk recognize their actions as helpful, and they will be somewhat willing to give them asylum when they are in need, and even sometimes help you to the best of their abilities.
