I started out as an investigator for my local guard. I worked hundreds of cases pulled bad men off the streets. During which time I met my wife. We worked most cases together, we made a good team.
One day an old farmer came in to report that some hooligan was stealing his cows. It didn't take us long to find him. Some warlock high on Skooma, was sacrificing them to some sort of dark lord, typical thursday where I am from, or so I thought. When we raided the dungeon he was hold up in, he managed to send an eldrich blast straight through the door into my wife. She died instantly. We were able to capture him easily though, because he stopped to point and laugh at what he had done.
Normally, he would have been executed the next day. But, when I cam into the station that morning, he was gone. It turned out, the local lord had ordered the constable to release him. I was furious and barged into his chambers demanding an explanation. He, just smiled, and order the guards to arrest me. I don't remember what happened. All I know is I came to in a cave outside of town. With the constable standing in front of me. He explained, the warlock was his cousin, and he was experimenting with dark magic under orders from the lord. The constable, and everyone involved in the raid, were bribed to keep their mouths shut, the rest of the guard was told that I murdered my wife, and that I should be arrested on site if I ever stepped foot into the city again.
From that day, in honor of my wife, I vowed to continue doing my job, and hunt down those who hurt others, and those that need help. But I would never again serve under another, where they could let their own motives deter me.

As an ex member of the guard you I have contacts with the local guard in any city I visit. These contacts inform me about any areas that tend to be crime ridden, local gangs, and any major illegal or dangerous happenings in the local area. They are frequently a source of bounties as well.
The type of people I tend to make friends with however tend to be honorable, as such my contacts will cease to work with me if I am ever wanted for a crime in that area, or if I associate myself with those who are.
