Naturalist (Variant: Fleecer) Image

You find solace in nature, always striving to protect it from the destructive forces of others. You aren't above stealing from men if it means you need not work, but often guide simple folk through the wilderness so as to protect it from their traipsing. Of course you don't do this for free though. You believe in the give and take of the natural world and so are not above hunting and gathering, but do so in a respectful manner.

Variant: Fleecer

You spent your youth under the sway of an ex con-artist with a love for the wild who taught you how to survive out here. You've honed your skills as a wandering guide to fleece travellers out of their possessions or steal from their camps under the cover of night. Paranoid around people, you're only comfortable around the animals and nature of the wilderness. Your only concern in life is for the wild, this is your land to protect and if they want to come in, they can pay the toll.

Life Out There

There are many kinds of wanderers and travellers, each with their own specialties and choice locale. Consider the places you have visited and how they have impacted you. You can roll on the table below to determine your occupation during your time in the wild or chose one that best fits your character.

d8 Life Out There
1 Forester
2 Trapper
3 Guide
4 Outcast or Exile
5 Pilgrim
6 Hunter Gatherer
7 Pickpocket
8 Highway Robber

Feature: Animal guide

If your character has the naturalist background, you may select this background feature instead of Wanderer.

You have the service of an animal guide. Choose a beast that has a challenge rating of 0. Your guide serves as a companion through the wilderness, but does not fight for you and will not perform any obvious dangerous tasks for you. They can stand guard of your camp and alert you to anything in the area using their perception. They can perform other mundane tasks (up to the discretion of the DM) like carrying messages to friendly parties. If the beast is in a dangerous situation, it will flee.

If the beast dies, you can obtain another one by spending 12 hours bonding with another beast that isn't hostile to you.

Suggested Characteristics

Often considered rude and uncouth among civilised folk, naturalists have little respect for life in cities. The call of the wild is the most important thing to them, and they will protect all nature fiercely. Never intervening in the food chain or harshness of the natural world, they believe in preservation of the environment above all else.
