You have spent many years as part of a Dionysian troupe, called a thiasos. You have indulged in the dizzying, wine-fueled divine mania of the god of wine, performing sacred orgiastic rites and dances while in divine ecstacy, and bizarre, violent hunts driven by the wild frenzy often inspired by the god. You have intimate knowledge of the magical power locked in pure wine. You have led unsuspecting folk into wild revels of Dionysos and ensured their safe passage from civilization to wild abandon and then back again. You are something between a fanatic and a lay priest of Dionysos.
You are not always susceptible to Dionysos frenzy, as maintaining the perfect balance between mania and rationality is where Maenads glimpse and approach the divine. Why did you leave the troupe? Did you choose to bring Dionysos revels to the people? Was there a sudden calling from the god of wine to serve a different purpose? Perhaps you felt the nomadic and frenzied lifestyle taking a toll on your physical health and decided to allow yourself respite from the revels through travelling.
- Skill Proficiencies: Survival, Religion
- Equipment: A thyrsus of Dionysus (a walking staff decorated with vine leaves and topped with a pinecone that you use in your frenzied dances and ceremonies), a theatrical mask, an amphora full of common wine, a set of common clothes, brewer's supplies, a leopard's pelp and a pouch containing 10 gp.
- Your connection to Dionysos lingers, allowing you to perform sacred lay rites of the god of wine and commune with his other followers. Dionysus' troupes recognize you as one of their own and welcome you into their midst. You and your adventuring companions can expect to be welcomed into a troupe for a day. In exchange for wine and your participation in their revels, they will provide healing, information and provisions appropriate to a common lifestyle. The flipside is, you may find yourselves blindingly drunk and exhausted if you partake in a particularly lengthy revel, gaining one level of exhaustion the following morning.
You may also have ties with a specific troupe you've travelled before and you have close friends within. While in the vicinity of this troupe, you can call upon them for assistance, provided the assistance you ask for is not hazardous and you remain in good terms with the troupe.
Suggested Characteristics
The lifestyle of the maenad is not one for the faint of heart. The physical and psychological demands on the mortal body can be intense, shaping your personality from the onset. The ideologies of Dionysos and the individual troupe can affect mannerisms and beliefs. Their flaws may be a mild addiction to the wild abandon of the divine mania, or a growing aversion to the rites of the god.
