While many people live their lives grounded in the reality they reside in, there are some who have opened their eyes to the truths of the multiverse, able to see and sometimes manipulate time and space. The Oracle is one whose magic is centered around the past, present, and future, and all the possibilities that can come of it. Called soothsayers, fortune-tellers, sages, and prophets, these few awoken ones must learn to control their abilities and decipher which visions are truth, and which are fallacy.
- Skill Proficiencies: Insight and Arcana
- Tool Proficiencies: Either two languages (exotic or common), or one language and the Herbalism Kit
- Equipment: Your favored fortune-telling focus (a crystal ball, tea leaves, oracle bones, tarot cards, ETC), a small journal and ink pen, incense, 5 small prayer candles, a stick of chalk of any color, a set of common clothes, and a small silk purse with 10 gp.
Though many believe all Oracles can see the future, many have visions of different qualities that vary from person to person. Choose or roll the description of your character's visions, or work with the DM to come up with your own.
d8 | Vision Qualities |
---|---|
1 | I see the future, and what will come. How far ahead I can see ahead, though, I can't always tell. |
2 | I am able to see the past, and what has happened to a person, place, or thing. |
3 | I see outcomes and possibilities, and how our fates split into branches depending on how we live our lives. My visions change and splinter with the choices I make, and all I can do is choose the most probably outcome. |
4 | I sense, hear, or see ghosts, spirits, deities, celestials, or demonic entities (pick one or a few, discuss with the DM). |
5 | I specialize in energy and the spirit in people, places, and things. Sometimes, I see auras and can often discern what kind of people I can or cannot trust. |
6 | I sometimes get visions into situations outside my own, like a person experiencing an tragedy, a dog playing with their human, or a bird building a nest. How far away or close these visions happen from me varies wildly. |
7 | I am sensitive to the emotions in people or locations. I feel pain and grief when I walk in a burnt down forest, or intense joy when walking past the playground. |
8 | I am able to sense what is happening in different dimensions and planes, and like to travel to these places. How strong or accurate these feelings are vary. |
In the correct conditions, you may have a vision of the quality chosen from the table above. Sometimes you can summon them, sometimes they come randomly, some are correct, and some are not. Discuss the frequency and types of visions your Oracle will have, and what kind of conditions must be met to see them.
To summon a vision purposefully, describe to the DM what you are trying to see, hear, or feel, then roll an Arcana or Insight check (your choice). The DM will determine your DC, depending on how well you know the target of your prediction, and how far you are trying to see/how far you are physically from your target. While it may be easier to read the fortune of a party member or friend, the challenge will likely be harder if they are far away from you.
If you fail your check, you see nothing.
On a success, the DM will decide what you see, and while the details may be fuzzy or have pieces missing, the information will be mostly accurate. You will see your vision at first, but after an amount of time/detail determined by the DM, you must roll follow-up checks of increasing difficulty to maintain concentration or get more detail.
You can do this once per short or long rest, and must use your Oracle focus.
Suggested Characteristics
Some Oracles are quiet and studious, some are flamboyant and wild, feeling the spark of the universe inside them. Is your character fascinated by their powers or do they shun them? How did their friends and family react to their abilities?
