You spent most of your life in the company of a time traveler, visiting sights and societies very far away, both in distance and in time. You've braved the elements and wilderness, and the perils of Temporal Prime to experience exotic customs from worlds away, learn lore forgotten long ago, and acquire knowledge that won't be understood for years to come.
- Skill Proficiencies: Pick 2: History, Future History, Insight
- Tool Proficiencies: One kit or device from a foreign land or other time period
- Languages: One of your choice. Can include fluency in ancient lost languages, or future dialects that have not yet evolved.
- Equipment: A set of clothes from another time period, a kit matching the proficiency taken above, a flask of white vinegar, a multi-segmented money pouch containing 5 coins from a future era, 5 coins from a past era, and 5 gp.
You are able to very quickly acclimate to cultures from periods other than your own. 15 minutes of conversing with a native of any time period who speaks a dialect of a language you know either derived from the one known by you -or from which your dialect was derived- results in you becoming fluent in the new future or ancient past dialect. Spending one hour studying a document written in such a dialect allows you to read and write in that dialect afterward. This time is reduced by half if you've become fluent by conversing with a native. Additionally, spending an hour immersed in a foreign culture allows you to check Int (Investigation) for contemporary cultures, Int (History) for past cultures, or Int (Future History) for future cultures, to figure out the time period you are in. Using the wrong check will grant accuracy from the millenium to the century. Using the right check will grant accuracy from the century to the decade. DM's decision on specific accuracy of all time estimates, as some decades saw lots of change, and others did not. If this check is failed, it may be attempted again after each additional hour spent immersed in that culture. Spending a full day there allows you to pick up customs relating to etiquette, law, and commerce. Any penalties due to prejudice or ignorance that normally applies to foreign visitors to that culture no longer apply to the Traveler.

A background called Time Traveller, created by Wolfbat, would also be appropriate for use with my Chronomancer subclass. It is a background with a more specific application than this one, but it is well crafted, and looks like it would make it pretty easy to lead plot or character development to intersect with a Chronomancer in some way. It may work best in campaigns that have Chronomancer NPCs or villains.
