These nobles are well known families they are powerful and dangerous, often with many underground business ventures. they part take in everything from drugs, smuggling, human trafficking, slaves, espionage, assassinations and murder.
they lied and cheated their way to the top. after they established themselves, they become more "noble" than in the past. even though what happens under the table is "known" there is little to no evidence to pin the family. They are respected like any other noble family, people try to not cross them out of fear of what might happen.

Thanks to your position you are can walk down the darkest allies comfortably as only the most daring or stupid criminals dare cross you. you can also stand proud in the company of other nobles even though your family is not well liked they are respected if not feared, some other noble family's have a good relationship with your family as they help them clime the social ladder. Nobles tend you help you in exchange for a favor. and depending on the criminal you can bully smaller criminals for information without much difficulties, but other high status criminals will also help you in exchange for a favor.
