Disgraced Student Image

You were enrolled in the most prestigious magic academy the world has to offer, and you were known as a bright and dedicated student, destined to become a great wizard. However, perhaps born out of an inflated ego over the praises you had received, you cultivated a disregard for the rules and you thought yourself smarter than the old wizards that tried to teach you.

At some point, your hubris became your undoing. Believing that you knew better, you gained access to and attempted to perform a spell that had been long locked away and forbidden by the academy, only for your attempt to end in disaster. Perhaps an innocent person died in the process, the academy was left greatly damaged, or something that had been long locked away was finally released. Whatever the result, your actions led to your expulsion, and the name you sought to write in the history books was ruined.

Skill Proficiencies: Arcana, plus your choice of one from among History, Investigation, Religion, Insight or Medicine
Languages: Two of your choice
Equipment: The scholar’s robes of your academy, a writing kit (small pouch with a quill, ink, folded parchment, and a small penknife), a small leather notebook embroidered with the symbol of your academy, and a pouch containing 15 gp

Aftermath

Choose one or more consequences that were caused as a result of your experiment and expulsion.

d6 Aftermath
1 An innocent person was killed as a result of my experiments.
2 My name has been spread around, and wizards who find out who I am treat me with animosity.
3 Upon hearing of my misdeeds, my family disowned me.
4 The spell backfired on me, and as a result I suffered injuries that disfigured part of my body.
5 A large part of the academy building was completely destroyed in the process.
6 The spell broke the bindings that kept a horrible entity locked away.

Feature: Learning The Hard Way

Throughout your studies, you filled your academy notebook with all sorts of tidbits and useful information relating to arcane lore, and somehow you managed to sneak it out with you when you left the academy. You can usually recall small pieces of obscure, arcane-related information with a quick glance through your notebook. As you were still in the beginning of your academic life when you were expelled, your scribbles contain nothing particularly powerful. They do, however, make you a bit of a master of arcane trivia.

There is, however, one exception. Alongside the countless pieces of inconsequential tidbits, the forbidden spell that caused your expulsion is also scribbled in your notebook. Even though you now know of this spell's disastrous effects and you finally admit that it is far too much for you to handle, you have a feeling that it might come in handy in the future.

Suggested Characteristics

Use the tables below as the basis for your traits and motivations, modifying the entries when appropriate to suit your identity as a disgraced student.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I'm not particularly good at reading the mood, and tend to spew off trivia when it's not exactly appropriate.
2 My academy notebook contains the greatest secrets of the arcane—or so I'd like others to believe.
3 I tend to explain everything to others as if they're too stupid to understand even the simplest arcane concepts.
4 I might be a bit too curious for my own good, and I can't resist delving deeper, especially when someone tells me I can't.
5 I have a hard time telling when someone is making a joke or using sarcasm, and I tend to take everything literally.
6 My personal notebook collection has grown to an almost unmanageable size as I like to scribble down EVERYTHING I find interesting.
7 I can't help but to butt in on any conversation regarding magic, even if it has nothing to do with me.
8 Nobody tells me what I can and can't do, and I will do the opposite just to spite them.
d6 Ideal
1 I will use the knowledge I have gathered to improve and empower myself.
2 I will use the knowledge I have gathered for the good of others.
3 Limits were create by old people, afraid that the younger generation will surpass them.
4 Knowledge should be free, not locked away and warded in a decaying tower.
5 Whatever happened, happened, and dwelling in the past is a fool's errand.
6 Limits exist for a reason, and I now know to accept and respect them.
d6 Bond
1 I am extremely protective of my academy notebook, and will disregard my own well-being if it means keeping it safe.
2 I must find a way to redeem myself and clean my name.
3 My punishment would have been far more severe had it not been for one of my teachers who stood up for me.
4 Whatever I released into the world, it is my obligation to deal with it.
5 The old, secretive ways have no place in today's world. I will work to make sure they don't.
6 I must learn to master the forbidden magic that has caused me so much grief.
d6 Flaw
1 Another's life is a small price to pay for knowledge.
2 Others tend to find my superior intelligence off-putting. Their fault for being stupid, of course.
3 I will gladly risk my life in pursuit of knowledge.
4 I'm not a coward. My sense of self-preservation simply tends to overpower my mind.
5 If I can't solve it with magic, it can't be solved at all. What you did was dumb luck.
6 I know I say knowledge should be free, but perhaps it's best if I keep a few things to myself.
