You have spent most of your life in the service of a Red Wizard of Thay. In return for their tutelage in wizardly magic, you performed menial, often demeaning tasks for an indifferent (at best) or cruel (at worst) master. Perhaps your master died, assassinated by another ambitious Red Wizard. Maybe one day you decided you’d had enough and ran away. It’s possible that you stuck with it and became a Red Wizard yourself. In any case, your apprenticeship had a profound impact on you.
- Skill Proficiencies: Arcana, Investigation
- Tool Proficiencies:
Alchemist’s Supplies
- Languages:
Two of your choice
- Equipment: A set of robes, a wand you can use as a spellcasting focus, a red cloak, and a pouch containing 15 gp
People recognize you as an apprentice to a Red Wizard, and they’re careful not to draw your anger or ridicule. You can get away with minor criminal offenses, such as refusing to pay for food at a restaurant or breaking down a door at a local shop, if no legal authorities witness the crime. Most people are too daunted by you to report your wrongdoing.
Suggested Characteristics
Wizard apprentices are profoundly impacted by their experience. Red Wizard apprentices are often even more deeply affected, because Thay is a magocracy where assassination, intrigue, and exploitation are simple facts of daily life. A wizard’s apprentice in Cormyr doesn’t have to worry about her fellow apprentices poisoning her or pushing her out a window.
| d8 | Personality Trait |
|---|---|
| 1 | I tend to talk about magic as if everyone understands it, and can’t comprehend the ignorance of those who don’t. |
| 2 | I am incredibly slow to trust. Fair-weather friends and two-faced backstabbers have struck a few too many times. |
