The Chantry teaches us that it is the hubris of men which brought the darkspawn into our world. The mages had sought to usurp Heaven. But instead, they destroyed it. They were cast out, twisted and cursed by their own corruption. They returned as monsters, the first of the darkspawn. They became a blight upon the lands, unstoppable and relentless. The dwarven kingdoms were the first to fall. And from the deep roads, the darkspawn drove at us again and again, until finally we neared annihilation... until the Grey Wardens came. Men and women from every race, warriors and mages, barbarians and kings, the Grey Wardens sacrificed everything to stem the tide of darkness, and prevailed. It has been four centuries since that victory, and we have kept our vigil. We have watched and waited for the darkspawn to return. But those, who once called us heroes, have forgotten. We are few now, and our warnings have been ignored for too long. It may even be too late, for I have seen with my own eyes what lies upon the horizon. Maker help us all.
There are endless stories to every Warden. Whether you were a commoner or a knight, all who are brought into the Wardens have their own story to tell. Work with your DM to decipher how you were brought into the Grey Wardens.
- Skill Proficiencies: Grey Warden's must be strong and quick in order to face off against a darkspawn threat. A Grey Warden also must be versed in ancient texts or magical puzzles. They must be able to find hidden clues or understand the area around them.
- Tool Proficiencies: Grey Wardens are like any military, there are plenty of jobs and tasks to go along with killing darkspawn. Masons, Smiths, Tinkerers, and so much more.
- Equipment: All Grey Wardens have access to their respective Warden armory. Swords, daggers, axes, shields, heavy or light armor. There are no limit to the Warden's equipment.
Once one becomes a Grey Warden, they have the ability to sense darkspawn's presence around them. Even invisible darkspawn cannot sneak up on a seasoned Grey Warden. This also makes a Grey Warden immune to the poisonous blood of the darkspawn and even allows them to truly face the darkspawn to their fullest. People often respect the Grey Wardens and will never purposefully stand between the Warden and their goal of defeating the darkspawn threat, which often leads to people avoiding the Grey Wardens unless they are approached directly.
In any situation, including when the Warden is asleep, if there are Darkspawn within 100 feet of you, your DM must inform you of their position. Against Darkspawn, you gain advantage on attack rolls for the first attack against them.
Suggested Characteristics
A Grey Warden is a defender first and foremost. The people are their priority, however it is up to the Warden's upbringing that will determine if they will give a coin to an orphan before killing a darkspawn.
