Coming from far away lands, the explorer is the definition of ephemeral. Due to their travelling nature, they know almost all about the world they live in, be it the land, the people, or their history.
- Skill Proficiencies: The explorer is a master survivalist and has been through many close calls. The explorer background grants two proficiencies, with the options being: History, Animal Handling, Nature, Medicine and Survival.
- Tool Proficiencies: The explorer background allows the player to choose a proficiency in a tool or an instrument, with the tools being the Alchemist's Supplies, Brewer's Supplies, Calligrapher's Supplies, Cartographer's Tools, Cook's Utensils, Smith's Tools, Tinker's Tools, Disguise Kit, Herbalism Kit or the Navigator's Tools, while the instruments can be the Pan Flute, Flute, Lute or the Horn.
- Languages: The explorer background allows the player to choose two additional languages, being able to choose between Celestial, Draconic, Dwarvish, Elvish, Gnomish, Goblin, Halfling, Infernal or Orc.
- Equipment: The explorer's starting equipment consists of a adventurer's pack, a map of the continent and a crossbow with twenty arrows or two daggers.
After surviving in the wild for so long, the explorer is able to find any hiding spot in which they can take a short or long rest. However, their wild appearance makes it difficult to be accepted in urban areas.
