For whatever reason, you are not in the body that you were born into. Your soul has departed that body and taken another. This may have happened deliberately or by accident. It may have been a punishment of some kind. Whatever the reason, you now inhabit this body and it is up to you as to how you react.
- Skill Proficiencies: Arcana, Insight, Deception
Inhabiting another body has given you a unique understanding of others, as well as the ability to hide this fact from others. You gain proficiency in Insight & Deception.
The use of magic in your transformation has given you an innate knowledge of all things magical. You gain proficiency in Arcana.
- Tool Proficiencies: You gain 2 tool proficiencies - one related to your original form and one related to your new body.
- Languages: One of your choice
- Equipment: A scroll case stuffed full of notes from your studies into your condition (either furthering or returning to your own body), Common;set of common clothes[/item], and 5 gp
Given your unique situation, you can identify if a person or creature has been touched by magic.
You can tell if someone is under the influence of the arcane if you spend 10 minutes or more in conversation with them. You can tell that they are affected by magic, but not what school of magic, or which specific spell. You are also unable to identify if they cast the spell on themselves or if it was cast by another person. You can however identify which body part or parts the spell is affecting (Such as a psychic defense spell creating an arcane trace around a head, or a charisma based enchantment covering only the mouth).
Suggested Characteristics
Is your one goal to return to your body by any means? Do you seek revenge if this was done against your will? If it was an experiment you undertook willingly, are you hoping to further your research? Discuss with your DM how this happened to you and how you can build it into your world.
As a bonus idea, what happens when this corporeal form is destroyed? Do you die as normal, or do you try and wander to a new body? What happens if you take on the form of another? Do you battle for the body? Are they forced out into nothingness? Could they try and seek you out for stealing their body? This is another aspect to discuss with your DM. Do you make a series of contested skills checks to see if you are successful in your attempted takeover?

Pretty cool backstory.
Three skills, 2 tools, and a language?
That's a total of 6 instead of the standard 4.
Yeah, the idea was that having the mental prowess of 1 character and the physical prowess of another gives a more varied mix of things.
I've not playtested it yet to see what it works like balance-wise and could always edit it, but i don't think it would overbalance things - like variant humans starting with a feat.
If anyone gets there before me and wants to use it, please do let me know how it plays!
I love the idea. Very well done.
