A warrior and protector of people, you come from humble beginnings and serve a great cause. Your allegiance is first to your people, and second your king. As Medjay, you are honor bound to stand as a warrior amidst chaos, lead the youth of your land to brighter futures, and give aid to all who seek it under your care. Your responsibilities are great, but people will recognize you as both a noble among commoners, and friend among scoundrels. Among your many roles, you're known as a mediator, a lorekeeper, and a guardian.
Work with your DM to come up with a village from where you hail, and a leader you serve. You have a lineage of Medjay before you who are considered your kin even if there is no blood relation. As Medjay of your people, you will have some history of fighting and protecting those around you, either from beasts, bandits, or other creatures. Your services to your community would have been noticed by the nobility above you, and thus you were called to serve the rulers of your land as a protector of the people.
What kind of conflicts have you encountered? What contacts do you have in your community? Is your ruler a just ruler? Have you had conflicts with the ruler over decisions? What roles did you fill in your community? Did you work alone, or with a group of Medjay?
Most importantly, a Medjay away from their homeland must have been tasked with some great duty, or outcast by circumstance. What is your current goal, and why has it brought you away from home? Were you forced from your village? Has the ruler betrayed you? If so, what can restore you to your original home?
- Skill Proficiencies: Persuasion, Survival
- Tool Proficiencies: Herbalism Kit
- Languages: One of your choice
- Equipment: A set of wandering clothes, a ring of a patron animal, a small gift from your tribe, and a satchel containing 15 gp
With your position, many know you are the protector of the people, and thus will give you aid. In your home village, you have great standing with the people, and will be given accommodation, supplies, and sometimes even money, worth a modest lifestyle's worth of aid. Outside of your home, you are still seen as a servant to the people, and commoners will let you sleep and eat in their homes, equating to poor lifestyle expenses.
Lastly, a Medjay may request and gain an audience with a noble or ruler who would be welcoming of the Medjay. If the Medjay has been outcast, or hails from another region or ruler, they may be ignored or hunted down, and unable to request an audience.
Suggested Characteristics
Nobles are born and raised to a very different lifestyle than most people ever experience, and their personalities reflect that upbringing. A noble title comes with a plethora of bonds—responsibilities to family, to other nobles (including the sovereign), to the people entrusted to the family’s care, or even to the title itself. But this responsibility is often a good way to undermine a noble.
Duty and honor bound, the life of a Medjay is difficult. Constant travel and conflict is the everyday life for this individual, and the hardships are many. However, a good Medjay is selfless and passionate about their people, and thus they are often respected greatly by their home village. While their physical rewards may be few, the safety and livelihood of their people is often payment enough.
