Born From Clay Image

You were created artificially using a vessel, the wishes of a mortal and the magic of an extraplanar benefactor. Whether this benefactor was a Celestial, a Fiend, a Fae or something similar is up to circumstance. Regardless, because of the powerful magic of a blessing or contract, you are now fully alive. It is now up to you to decide what you will do with your life, as you have been granted one.

Note: This background is loosely based off of the "Alchemic Construct" Background. Its main purpose is to add interest and diversity to roleplay, and also serve as a beneficial background for spellcasting classes such as the wizard, warlock and sorcerer classes.

Skill Proficiencies: Choose two from Arcana, History, Insight, Investigation, Medicine, Nature or Perception. If you feel like other skills would fit your character's backstory better, and the GM allows, other skills may be added into this selection.
Tool Proficiencies: Choose one from Alchemist's Supplies, Brewer's Supplies, Calligrapher's Supplies, Cartographer's tools, Poisoner's Kit, Disguise Kit, Forgery Kit, any Gaming set or any musical instrument, or choose none for an additional language.
Languages: Choose any language, including exotic languages, preferably from your benefactor. If you chose no tool proficiency, choose a second language as well.
Equipment: Some documentation of your creation (could be a journal, drawing or even a magical object), simple robes, a marking of some sort of significance on your body, such as a tattoo or birthmark, some sort of artifact from your birthplace, such as a seashell, crystal or brooch, and a small sack carrying 5gp.

Benefactor

Your body was animated via the powerful magic of an extraplanar being. You may choose one of your own design, or use the table below.

d6 Benefactor
1 Genie
2 Fiend
3 Celestial
4 Fae
5 Unfathomable Being
6 Creature from the Deep

Feature: Unnatural Creation

You were brought to life from an inanimate form unnaturally via the agreement of a mortal and an extraplanar being. As such, you are viewed by spellcasters and extraplanar beings in a unique way. Most extraplanar beings and mortal spellcasters will regard you with curiousity and interest; conversely, the fae and druids will view you as unnatural and an abhorrence, and will be less agreeable or even outright hostile.

Your body was originally made from clay. You have a resistance to fire damage. Additionally, you count as a Construct for spellcasting purposes.

Suggested Characteristics

Depending on your relationship with your mortal creator, your relationship with your extraplanar benefactor, and your relationship with the world around you, your personality as an artificial being may vary a great deal. If you were raised well, you may very well be just like any other person; in contrast, if scorned, you may be vengeful, misfit or even traumatized.

d8 Personality Trait
1 Despite my circumstances, I am a normal, unassuming person. Or, at least I try to be.
2 My creator decided I did not need to feel feelings.
3 I was responsibly raised by my creator to be kind and compassionate to others.
4 I am servile and obedient by nature, as I was clearly created by someone more powerful than I.
5 The only one who will stand up for me is myself, and I do so via being assertive... or even aggressive.
6 I am deeply curious about how normal people experience the world.
7 I want to experience every joy in life, every little pleasure that makes life satisfying for those naturally born. I even want to experience natural tragedies, too.
8 My experience as an artificial creature and knowing the ways of magic allows me to be a wise, scholarly wellspring of magical knowledge.
d6 Ideal
1 Betterment. As a stranger to normal conventions, I can clearly see the flaws in this world. I yearn to fix it. (Good)
2 Power. I am not like normal mortals. I am superior to them, and they should know this. (Evil)
3 Purpose. I, as well as every creature in this world, was created for a reason that we all must fulfill. (Lawful)
4 Freedom. Just because I was created by someone else, does not mean I am obligated to be what they want of me. I am free to do what I wish with my life. (Chaotic)
5 Normalcy. I am tired of the chaos and strife that arose of my unnatural creation. I just want to live like a normal person. (Neutral)
6 Wanderlust. I want to know everything there is to know about this world, and experience all of the joys of life. (Any)
d6 Bond
1 My creator raised me as if I were their child, providing me with love and security.
2 The means of my creation has sparked within me an interest in magic, and the study of it.
3 I was created as a consort or companion to someone. They are the only person I have.
4 I intend to serve my benefactor. They are my master.
5 I slaughtered my creator(s), as they mistreated me. I deeply mistrust everyone I meet.
6 I want to begin my experience with life with seeing every part of the world that I can reach.
d6 Flaw
1 I do not understand people, and easily aggravate or set off others.
2 Emotions are extremely difficult to comprehend and control, especially my own. I am caught in the throes of my own rage and grief.
3 I believe the rules of society simply do not apply to me.
4 I was mistreated so badly that I am afraid of almost everyone, and cannot stand up for myself.
5 I was sheltered, and do not comprehend how evil people can be. I blindly trust almost everyone.
6 I crave normalcy to the point where I stay out of all conflict, even if it is amoral to do so.

Contacts

Depending on your character's relationship with their creators, they may have contacts with said figures in their life. You may choose one or several from the below table, create your own or simply have none at all, depending on what your GM allows or asks for.

d6 Contact
1 My creator was one individual whose wish for a companion of some sort was granted.
2 My creator was a society or group of people, who created me for a purpose that I am not entirely aware of.
3 My extraplanar magical benefactor stole me away from my creator(s) to protect me.
4 My creator(s) released me into society, afraid of what they had created, and I raised myself.
5 An organization that was not my creator(s) raised me in secret. They are like my family to me.
6 Upon integrating into society, I was able to make mortal friends. They are unaware of the circumstances of my creation.
