As a pilot, you have professionally mastered both aerial movement independently and with vehicles. While many folk enjoy having their feet planed firmly on the ground, you would like nothing more than to sky-dive from extreme heights (with a parachute of course). The skies seem to speak to you and any craft that can transport you through its domain seems to gain a life of its own under your steady hand. These sky vehicles can range from small to incredibly large, complex devices. Whatever the size or complexity, the vehicle seems to be an extension of your very hand when it is up in the air Your skills often attract the attention of nobles who hire you for numerous reasons. These can range from speedy, secretive voyages to light, luxury trips. The reason or price matters little . All you care about is the voyage itself and the exciting discoveries that lie in the vast blue domain. The lack of pilots in society makes them highly valuable and nobles will often have a private pilot if they are wealthy enough.
There are numerous ways you attained your mastery of the skies which can be detailed at the player's discretion or in the background table. A common theme across many pilots, however, is their dedication to their craft. They are not immediately willing to hire a crew unless they can interview every member and ensure that they pose no danger to the impending journey.
- Skill Proficiencies: Acrobatics, Nature, Survival
- Tool Proficiencies: carpenter's or woodcarver's tools, cartographer's tools
- Languages: Pilots understand any language associated with their aerial wildlife/organizations. This is due to their extensive time spent in the skies.
- Equipment: silk rope (50 ft), bullseye lantern, ball bearings, 10 days worth of rations
Your extensive studies of the skies and its associated winds, weather, moisture, etc... has given you extensive knowledge about its patterns and upcoming events. There is a 80% you can detect rough weather (heavy rain/hail, thunder & lightning, etc....) a day before it occurs through your various observations. If detected, there is a 60% you know what the weather will be and the appropriate response the party should take.
While on an air vehicle, all your proficiency bonuses increase by 1. In addition, you get a +4 proficiency whenever making checks on the air vehicle's movements. You can manipulate vehicles to respond to signals far better than the average individual. With this ability, you can perform such actions as turning a vehicle on a dime, performing dive routines, or deftly riding the roughest turbulence. Finally, the thrill of the sky gives you a boosted endurance increasing your Constitution by 1 while in the air and allowing you to stand at the controls for 24 hours before you need to rest.
You are a master of aerial movement. As such, any falling damage sustained from any height is halved. In addition, your movement speed is tripled while in the air and falling from initially 500 feet or above.
Suggested Characteristics
The sky seems to be a natural extension of yourself. Depending on your background and area, your personality and appearance can reflect the loud, thundering sky you often hear overhead or the mellow, blue sky that always seems to hang over your head.
| d8 | Personality Trait |
|---|---|
| 1 | I can always buy another air vehicle. I cannot buy friends. |
| 2 | I am one with the wind flowing from location to location. I lazily observe unfolding situations often getting lost in my own thoughts. |
| 3 | I tend to have little emotion on the ground. However, as soon as I am in the air, I spring to life barking orders and taking charge of the situation. |
| 4 | I am awful at keeping secrets or being subtle. I often will blurt out secrets under the smallest amount of pressure. |
| 5 | I am very superstitious. I am not necessarily scared of ghosts, ghouls, curses, etc.... I just believe in what many do not especially concerning air vehicle customs and rituals. |
| 6 | I feel like the responsible adult. I show up early, clean the air vehicle constantly, and makes sure everything runs smoothly. |
| 7 | I execute dangerous air maneuvers even for a highly trained pilot like myself. |
| 8 | I care deeply about appearance. The sheen of my air vehicle should match my formal presentation. |
| d6 | Ideal |
|---|---|
| 1 | Reliability. If I am paid to do a job, I will finish the task to the very end. (Lawful) |
| 2 | Opportunity. I play along with those who hold something over my head, until I can give them the slip or a better deal comes along (Chaotic) |
| 3 | Courage. I transport those good folk others don't want transported. I can't allow suffering to happen without providing aid, often free of charge (Good) |
| 4 | Superiority. My aerial superiority means I am better than everyone tied to the ground. As such, I deserve their admiration and servitude. (Evil) |
| 5 | Liberty. I would rather have the skies belong to no one rather than someone. (Neutral) |
| 6 | Discovery. There's always a new adventure or sight over the next mountain, and there is always journey on the way. |
| d6 | Bond |
|---|---|
| 1 | If I keep moving forward, my past will never catch up with me. |
| 2 | I lost an important artifact kept in my family for generations while surfing on the wind. I have to find it else risk banishment from my family. |
| 3 | My last group of workers mutinied and kicked me off my air vehicle. I have to get back in the sky and out of the tavern. |
| 4 | If I keep moving forward, I will eventually find the perfect location to set up my own business for other pilots and air vehicles. |
| 5 | I had to betray my friend to get where I am today. I will not rest until I find him again. |
| 6 | A local house gave me the training necessary to become a pilot. Now they expect me to be their private pilot. |
| d6 | Flaw |
|---|---|
| 1 | I care more about my equipment and adventure than my passangers |
| 2 | Sometimes I lose track of the time or day when I surf through the skies. Hopefully, I don't forget the parachutes. |
| 3 | I am horrible with money vastly underestimating or overestimating the price of equipment or rations. I just want to get in the sky. |
| 4 | I don't value my air vehicle enough. It often makes its way onto the betting table. |
| 5 | I tend to be overly competitive and hotheaded when it comes to the sky. I have no problem facing down much larger beasts/creatures/organizations if they are butting in on my airspace. |
| 6 | I always forget where I park my air vehicle...or if I locked it. |

Posted Aug 1, 2018Backgrounds are nice for homebrew, since they have consistent rules. I see some of those rules broken here.
1) Backgrounds give 2 skill proficiencies, here you have 3.
2) Backgrounds give 2 other proficiencies/languages, here you have 2... But also a mechanically unlimited number of languages. It would be better to go with either one tool proficiency and choose a language, or ditch the language entirely.
3) Backgrounds give a flavourful effect lacking mechanics... Here the background feature you have is heavily mechanic. It would be more in the style of a background to suggest that you have a knack for predicting the weather, particularly at high altitudes. The two additional features (boosted proficiency and reduced falling damage) are completely out of line with backgrounds.
