Your life was one of constant danger and fear, in the shadowy, vast caverns of the Underdark. You may have entered and been unable to escape, been forced from one of the sparse settlements that span the Middledark, or maybe willingly descended in some form of exile. Whatever the reason, you spent years with no intelligent contact, in constant fear of the many horrific predators that skulk the insanity-inducing, lightless depths. Life was terror, and the experience has forever shifted the trajectory of your life.
How did your time in the Underdark play into you learning your trade, your skills? How has that isolation affected your character, or their faith? What eventually brought them out of the untamed Underdark? A divine mission? A new opportunity? Or was it a matter of finding their way out? Work with the DM to provide context to your character's class and race, and why your specific character is drawn to adventure after already having such a harrowing experience.

There's a reason people don't live alone in the Underdark; it's dangerous, dark, and psychologically oppressive. The reasons people end up wandering the Underdark are varied, and almost always tragic. You may select an origin from the table below or roll randomly to determine why your character ended up in the Underdark.
d6 | Origin |
---|---|
1 | Escaped slave/prey |
2 | Trapped/lost |
3 | Last survivor of fallen settlement |
4 | Exile/outcast |
5 | Scavenger |
6 | Treasure hunter |
From your time spent underground, you gained a remarkable attention to detail for your environment, and hardly ever get turned around. When travelling, you can always remember the general layout of where you've travelled a week prior, and can recognize signs of predators there that others might miss. Additionally, when foraging for food, you can tell if things are naturally poisonous or not.
Suggested Characteristics
Your early life borderlines on mind-shattering, and the experience has forever changed how you see and interact with others. Time spent in constant danger has shifted your priorities, and molded you into the person you are today.
