Whether by choice or by force, you heeded the call to action to fight in the service of your personal beliefs, a specific god or pantheon of gods. You are a soldier in a righteous army, fighting tooth and nail for your cause. You live and die by your beliefs, your deity or deities, and your weapons. You are not necessarily a paladin—fighting for your beliefs and your gods does not always include channeling holy power.
Choose a god, a pantheon of gods, or some other quasi-divine being, and work with your DM to detail the nature of your religious service. Were you, perchance, someone who felt the need to spread their deity or deities' gospel, whether by conquest or travel? Someone conscripted into a high priest's army? Or someone who simply wished to spread their ideology? Perhaps you felt your chosen divine calling to you in a vision or dream, an echo to pick up your arms and spread their influence throughout the world.
- Skill Proficiencies: Religion, and choose one of the following: Intimidation, Persuasion and Athletics.
- Languages: One of your choice
- Equipment: A holy symbol (given to you when you entered your crusade), a prayer book or prayer wheel, a trophy taken from a fallen enemy (a dagger, broken blade, or piece of a banner), a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp.
As a crusader, your determination and willpower fuels your desire to spread your beliefs and faith wherever you go. When you are in combat against a creature who does not follow your beliefs, you may make an Intimidation check. On a failure, the creature has disadvantage when attacking those who bear your symbol or fly the flag of your cause. This lasts for one minute or until the end of combat, whichever comes first. You may use this ability once per combat.
When not in combat, you have advantage on Persuasion checks meant to convince a creature not to fight against your cause.
The cause cannot be something generic and must uphold one important indisputable value. Examples include a king's sovereignty, a god or gods' right or superiority or a guild's primary mission.
Suggested Characteristics
Crusaders are shaped by their experiences in the battlefield, their beliefs or faiths, and the places in which they travel. The way in which they interact with others of their beliefs or faiths, other beliefs or faiths affect the way in which they view the world and their ideals. Flaws may be some hidden hypocrisy or heretical idea, and ideals and bonds may border on or become zealotry.
