The Mortalitasi are a group of mages and individuals. Popularly referred to as "Death Mages". They are responsible for the mummification of bodies, tending the dead and making sure spirits pass on properly. When needed the Mortalitasi are dispatched as "seekers" across the world to restore peace to areas riddled with evil spiritual activity. The Mortalitasi believe that when a soul of the dead refuses to cross over, it displaces the spirit. Because of this the order studies death extensively, and its members are known to experiment with necromancy. Some Mortalitasi keep animated skeletons as assistants or use skeletal horses as a means of transportation.
- Skill Proficiencies: Choose two from among Arcana, Investigation, Persuasion, or Deception
- Languages: Choose two, one of which is exotic. (Abyssal, Celestial, Deep Speech, Draconic, Infernal, Primordial, Sylvan, or Undercommon)
- Equipment: A Herbalism Kit, a musical instrument that you are proficient with, and one trinket of special significance (choose one or roll on the Gothic Trinkets table after this background). Also gain a set of common clothes and 1 sp.
Those who look into your eyes can see that you have seen unimaginable visions and that you are no stranger to the realm beyond. Though some might fear you, commoners will extend you every courtesy and do their utmost to help you. Unless you have shown yourself to be a danger to them, they will even assist you in the process of going to sacred sites or getting into restricted areas so you can perform your duties.
Additionally when you seek to soothe a scorned soul you have an easier time making contact with it as if it were under the speak with dead spell except with the following changes.
- Spirits are soothed by your presence and will often answer honestly.
- You have advantage on persuasion checks made on friendly spirits.
- In order to make contact with spirits who no longer have a corpse you must create a ritual (Incense and something the spirit treasured in life) and speak to the spirit in your dreams or through deep meditation.
