Freedom Fighter

Having spent time as a slave under some kind of oppression, you have come to know suffering and loss. Whether your people were ruled by a harsh tyrant, you found yourself in literal slavery, or you were subject to manufactured economic pressure, you have had to endure and ingrain a cutthroat way of survival into your mind. You either seek or have found a way to escape the oppression. You currently fight to overthrow the oppressors of the kind which you are familiar, whether they be in your homeland or around the world. 

The details of your situation can be worked out in coordination with your DM to fit the world where your adventure takes place. In what place did you struggle through hardship? Who was carrying out the oppressing? Were there others affected besides you, and how does that change the society and their mindset? Are you the only one who was able to get out from under such oppression? Do people still need rescuing?

Perhaps you find yourself in the process of getting out from under the iron grip of your circumstance. Are you able to physically get away from the situation? Are you the only one trying to make change, or are you working with others? Are you leading public protests or are you a part of an underground operation? Are you facing a single local oppressor or are you dealing with a global syndicate? 

These details can add a great deal of intrigue and drama to your character's narrative.

Freedom Fighters have varying upbringing and challenges, but those fighting for freedom end up developing similar traits. Usually rough around the edges and sometimes fending off despair, their connections, allies, and resources are treasured to be rare commodities. While what few boons they have serve to strengthen them, the sudden removal of such things can prove to be their downfall.
