You are a weekend warrior, a professional novice. You have the heart to serve and wish you were a hero like the heroes of old, but you lack the courage to go to war. War and service have been part of your family for generations. You studied math and science in school as a youth; studied accounting and other city jobs. You could have been part of a standing army, navy, a mercenary company, or militia group or special forces, but you chose not to, at least that is what you tell people. You preferred to only serve on a weekend a month, and that, sometimes, is even too much.

You have little to no actual combat experience. You spent most of your weekend time taking general mandated training. Half the time when you talk to people about your service, they think you are talking about a local security company or that you run security at the docks. You know enough acronyms and jargon to get by talking to any military person, and you know most military concepts on paper. You just have never actually fought in a battle or fired a cannon. You are salty enough to pass as a sailor and crude enough to be a soldier.

Skill Proficiencies: Deception, Performance
Tool Proficiencies: One type of gaming set, vehicles (land)
Equipment: A worthless coin given to you by a higher ranking individual with his insignia on one side and the military organization on the other side, a trophy taken from a fallen enemy that you never fought (a dagger, broken blade, or piece of a banner), a set of bone dice or deck of cards, a set of common clothes, and a purse containing 10 gp

Specialty

As a reservist, your rank was determined by the actual need of someone. Roll a d8 or choose from the options in the table below to determine your role:

d6 Specialty
1 Senior Officer
2 Junior Officer
3 Senior Enlisted
4 Junior Enlisted
5 Non-Rate
6 Inactive Reservist

Feature: Military Rank

You have a military rank from your career as a reservist, but any military member outside of the reserves has very little respect for your rank. If you successfully deceive other service members about your service, you can pull rank to exert influence over other soldiers and requisition simple equipment or horses for temporary use. You can also usually gain access to friendly military encampments and fortresses where your rank is recognized.

Suggested Characteristics

The horrors of war combined with the rigid discipline of military service leave their mark on all soldiers, shaping their ideals, creating strong bonds, and often leaving them scarred and vulnerable to fear, shame, and hatred.
