Innkeeper / Tavern-Keep Image

You own a small inn or tavern. You are known in your local community for the reputation your establishment carries. Such establishments, like people end up with their own personalities.  A table is provided to base this on, though anything you and your GM can agree on is fine.  You might be a pillar of your community, or the seedy bar which is keeping the neighborhood down.

Questions to answer:

Have you scraped together your life savings to buy or build one, inherited it, or built it by hand with or without the help of others?  Where is the inn located?  What is its condition? What is its name? What kind of an area is it in? Who frequents it?

Skill Proficiencies: Persuasion, and one of Animal Handling, Insight, Intimidation, Perception, Performance, or Slight of Hand,  (see table below to select one).
Tool Proficiencies: Brewer's Supplies or Cook's Utensils
Languages: One of your choice, but there should be a believable reason you picked up the language through this background...so probably not Celestial, Abyssal, etc...unless you can convince the GM...good luck...
Equipment: The deed to your establishment, Brewer's Supplies or Cook's Utensils, a set of common clothes, a pouch with 25g

Inn Type

Roll or choose one of these inn types that matches your vision of your inn.

d6 Inn Type
1 Country Inn. Your inn is either in a small town or country crossroads. Your inn commonly sees travelers with horses or livestock which need tending, you should pick Animal Handling.
2 Criminal Den. Your inn or tavern is used by local criminals to conduct business, whether with your blessing or not. You've picked up a trick or two to protect your earnings. You should pick up Slight of Hand.
3 Rough and Tumble. Your inn or tavern is filled with a rough crowd. It is rare that a night goes by without at least a shouting match. You've learned to control of situations through tough talk. Take Intimidation.
4 High Class Clientele. You are used to catering to the discerning tastes of the upper crust, to get the most coin you know how to make people feel important and diffuse tense situations. Choose Performance.
5 Adventurers' Watering Hole. Adventurers frequent your establishment, and some fakes. You hear lots of stories, some true, some outright fabrications. You've developed a talent for reading people to ensure you aren't swindled. Take Insight
6 Busy City Hangout. Your establishment tends to get rushes of clients due to it's strategic location. After work everyone stops in for a pint. Great business — difficult to ensure tabs are paid. You've learned to keep a sharp eye on things. Take Perception

Feature: Master of the Alehouse

You own a small inn or tavern. This includes as many employees as are needed to run the place.  These are paid out of the profits of your establishment. You have left a trusted caretaker in charge of running the establishment while you are gone.  Every month of game-time you roll 1d10 and subtract two from the result, then multiply that by 10 to determine how much gold your establishment makes or costs you. (1d10 – 2) × 10 ɢᴘ. The gold doesn't magically teleport into your pouch.  You can only retrieve it by physically going to the establishment to get it.

In addition the local community will know you and if your establishment doesn't have rough types around, view you as an upstanding member of society.  If on the other hand your establishment is the source of many altercations, you may be seen as a source of problems.  Use common sense here.  Also, "local community" means right around your establishment.  In a large city the areas immediately surrounding you would count as that.  Across the city they may have heard of your inn or tavern, but would not know you particularly, or even much about your place.

The GM is free to roll more frequently (say, once a week) or allow more than one roll per month to represent a better economy, or even just change the 10 ɢᴘ modifier to another greater than zero number. If as a GM you allow this background you should allow the player to reap a reward from it. At low player levels you might keep the modifier at 5 ɢᴘ and as the characters become more powerful increase it to represent the business gaining fame & success.  The money should never be a whole lot more than adventurers would make adventuring though.

Suggested Characteristics

A innkeeper or tavern keeper is generally of the merchant class, though some might be common folk. Innkeeper's motivations and personalities vary widely, as does the clientele they serve.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I have definite opinions on beer and/or wine. I know best what to drink, when, and what their quality is. I’m a bit of a snob on this topic.
2 I got where I am by watching where I spend every copper farthing. I will negotiate the best prices possible.
3 My inn is popular, but it could always stand to be more renown. I will ensure anyone who hasn’t heard of it before hears about it from me, people will come from far and wide.
4 I like to tell anecdotes about amusing or unruly patrons who have come through my establishment.
5 Hard work is the only way to get ahead. I work hard, and expect others to do so as well.
6 Don’t tell me how you feel, tell me what you want to drink or get out. You don’t have much use for emotions and aren’t moved much by them. Gruff.
7 You like to get people to talk about themselves. Not only is it a good way to get in their good graces, theres a lot to be learned that people will give away for free to an interested audience.
8 I don’t need to speak much for people to see my qualities. They can taste my beer, stay in my establishment, and observe the skills I bring to the table, I’d rather show, not tell.
d6 Ideal
1 Hospitality. I aim to be a good host whether I’m behind a bar or out on my own. Friendliness and kindness are their own reward. (Good)
2 Peace. My establishment provides a place of unity in our community. It is my desire to take that spirit with me wherever I go. (Lawful)
3 Libertarian. Live and let live. Do as you please, it’s not my problem until you affect me in some way. Then it’s my problem…and you now have a problem. (Chaotic)
4 Number One. I look out for me, after all, no one else will. I’ll cut others a break exactly as many times as I have been. None. (Evil)
5 Relationships. I make up my mind about folks based on how I feel about them. If I like you, I’ll do what I can. Otherwise, not so much. (Neutral)
6 Achievement. I work hard to build my business, I’m always on the lookout for new business relationships. (Any)
d6 Bond
1 I care deeply about my employees and patrons, I will do what I can to ensure their safety.
2 My family, back in town, needs to be cared for, they are the most important thing in the world to me.
3 I heard a story of adventure in my establishment, I need to find my own story. I need to take my measure against the great deeds I have heard of.
4 I was terribly wronged by someone with power (whether noble or criminal). I was unable to stop them at that time, but now I’m coming for them. They’ll never expect it.
5 Prior to this stage of my life I was a member of a powerful organization. They have come to me recently, they need me back for one last thing.
6 I am committed to having the an amazing establishment, I must procure new and unique products to ensure this is so.

3 I care a little too much about others, I do what I can to help anyone with a sob story
4 Uncomfortable interpersonal skills, your quirk tends to irritate people. Pick a quirk. Close talker, Uncomfortable question asker, Bad joke teller, Long story teller, etc.
