You've awoken in... You'd think its odd to wake up somewhere you aren't familiar with. In fact you can't even remember who you are. How did you get here? What is your name? What are you wearing? Who is that dead guy over there? As an amnesiac you've lost your memory of your former life, and must come up with a new one. Though you may still get glimpses or flashes of who you used to be your mind is a blank slate, ready to be re-moulded into someone else. Maybe you've hit your head, been cursed by a Deity, blasted by a powerful spell. Regardless of how you have lost your memories, they're long gone.
When you wake from your slumber you find yourself in one of many different places as determined by the following table, or by your DM. You should probably wok with your DM to see if your character is going to regain their memories or if your past comes back to haunt you in the story. Being an amnesiac can be a curse in some regards, but can also be a blessing to the right player with the drive to make a fresh start.
d8 | Conditions of Waking |
---|---|
1 | You awake in a forest leaning against a tree, with a wild animal sniffing to see if you are dead. |
2 | You awake in a graveyard half buried, and must claw your way out of the grave you were put into. |
3 | You awake in a dimly lit cave, surrounded by scheming goblins. |
4 | You awake floating on your back in a body of water, and quickly learn if you can swim or not. |
5 | You awake from a dream about a fragment of your old life, screaming in agony. |
6 | You awake in a tiny hut in a noisy, humid jungle. |
7 | You jolt awake in a city alleyway to the sound of a loud explosion (i.e. lightning, guards yelling, or a musket, etc). |
8 | You awake stark naked in a field/ forest/ desert in the middle of nowhere. A memento from your old life clasped tightly in your hand. |
Who could you have been before you lost your memory. Choose one quirk from the table below to determine a tidbit about your old life, alternatively your DM can have you roll on this table as well.
d6 | Quirk |
---|---|
1 | You find scales on creatures, items and people very attractive. |
2 | You've got soft/ rough skin on your hands. |
3 | You constantly find yourself whistling a tune no-one else has ever heard of. |
4 | You're wearing a piece of jewelry you can't seem to remove by any means. |
5 | You've got spellscars on the tips of your fingers, and occasionally magic erupts from you based on your emotional status. |
6 | No matter how much food/water you drink, you are always hungry/thirsty or starving/parched. |
- Skill Proficiencies: Having lost your memories you awake with a limited amount of skills. You gain proficiency in two skills of your choice from: Animal Handling, History, (about the world you are currently in but not about yourself or people you knew) Medicine, Nature, Stealth, or Survival.
- Tool Proficiencies: None.
- Languages: You awake with full fluency of common, and one other language of your choice that isn't exotic. You don't know how you know this language, but it comes as naturally to you, as breathing water is for a fish.
- Equipment: Having different circumstances of awakening allows for different equipment when you wake in any of the environments you find yourself in. You awake with a myriad of useful/ useless items and a faintly magical runestone bearing only your name, this runestone loses any magic properties when you speak your name aloud.
A set of very worn/ heavily damaged traveler's clothes, a belt pouch containing only lint and 5 copper pieces, a small notebook with many missing pages, two trinkets from the trinkets table, one with great significance to your old life, and the other a simple piece of junk... though you don't know which is which, and a starter pack of your choice. (at your DM's discretion your pack may be half empty, or missing crucial gear)
Since your past is a mystery to you, spells made to reveal your thoughts/ memories are made with disadvantage, and when you are knowingly subjected to a spell that would force you to make a saving throw you may make that save with advantage. Your lack of memories grants you a natural resistance to psychic damage.
Details about your former life can be acquired through many means to others, though you may uncover them through sleep/ dreams and often they will be broken non-linear fragments. Or just simple flashes of something you used to do as determined by the DM situationally.
Suggested Characteristics
An amnesiac is, in a sense, without identity. While they maintain a personality, they cannot recall the memories and experiences that shaped it. For this reason, amnesiacs tend to put great stock in instinct and intuition. They are usually open to any and all experiences, wanting to create new memories to make up for the lack thereof.
