Attorney Image

You studied law, history, and philosophy in an academy or institution of the land in which you practice. You apply your knowledge to pursue justice for all, whether it be to convict criminals, exonerate the innocent, or settle legal disputes. For the average citizen or adventurer, legal institutions and the judicial process are as difficult to navigate as any mystifying forest or labyrinthine dungeon. It is your job not only to translate esoteric laws to the layman, but to guide them through virtually any system of law.

Feature: Feature: Legal Expertise

Your knowledge of the law allows you to navigate the judicial system effectively and efficiently. You are familiar with the laws and regulations concerning your field of law in the land where you studied, and know where and how to find other laws of the land if you are unfamiliar with them. If you find yourself in another land with different laws, you can learn about one field of law within that land by studying them for 7 days.
If you are practicing a profession in your downtime, you can practice law as a defense attorney or, if you are employed by a city or town, as a prosecutor. Depending on your reputation, you can live either a comfortable or wealthy lifestyle.
Finally, if a character runs into legal trouble, you can represent them if they are willing to take you on as an attorney. Unless they were charged with a felony, such as grand larceny, aggravated assault, or murder, you can have them exonerated without issue. If the character gets into trouble with the law again within 30 days, they will have to go through the trial process as normal.

Suggested Characteristics

Experienced attorneys have intricate knowledge of laws and most judicial systems, which was acquired through diligent study. The adventuring life doesn’t suit most attorneys, since their duties normally require a good measure of stability and consistency. An attorney who becomes an adventurer typically does so out of necessity, or because they are driven to do the job that they feel the law has failed to perform. That said, there are some professionals who travel to offer their services across the land, looking to profit from the needy or to earnestly protect them.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I never sign a contract until I’ve read it three times over.
2 I’m always advising my companions against reckless actions, explaining possible, if unlikely, consequences.
3 I enjoy finding loopholes in every rule and law, and then pointing them out or debating them.
4 I like to tell stories about my previous cases. There are so many exciting and weird things I saw in court that I want to talk about!
5 I lord my knowledge of the law over others. The sight of a lawbreaker or accuser squirming as I recite my legal know-how is so satisfying.
6 Until I hear both sides of a dispute, I make a conscious decision to remain impartial. My biases don’t affect me - or so I like to think.
7 I listen attentively to every word in a conversation. If I hear any inconsistency with what a person said before, I’ll interrupt and point it out, even if it’s a bad time to do so.
8 Whenever I enter a new place, I have to learn the rules as soon as possible. The last thing I want is for anyone to get into trouble.
