As a marine aboard merchant vessel or warship your martial duties varied. Guarding the captain, enforcing discipline among the crew, repelling boarders and helping to board an enemy ship. Keeping light fingered shipmates from the gold or gems in the cargo hold. Also on occasion raiding an enemy coast or settlement.
You spent many a long watch helping the skilled of the ship in their duties as a result. Learning useful skills for whatever adventure may occur in the future.
Discuss with you DM what kind of ship/ships you served on, merchant vessels or a ship of the line. Decide whether you left the ship on good terms and if your former shipmates would welcome a chance to see you again. What happened to the ship you served on, is it still sailing or has some other fate befallen it.

Many an old shipmate has opened an inn or a tavern or taken up a trade in ports and cities across the world. When you encounter them they are always ready to lend a hand or trade in gossip over an ale or two. On occasion they will help to relive their glory days in the middle of a brawl just to prove they still can.
As for those who still sail they will grant you safe passage for a hand on the journey. You may be called upon to man ship in a storm or fend off a determined privateer.
Suggested Characteristics
You are considered another coarse sailor by the well to do who disdain to know you, but to those who bother to treat you with the respect of a fellow sentient you are a fierce and loyal friend.
You travel the world with a song in your heart and a desire to find peace at the end of your self imposed quest. Sometimes the song is full of joy and at times it is sad for lost comrades and a t times it is angry and full of vengeance.
