Mortician, embalmer, keeper of the dead - you are generally the last person to enter someone's life. Whether you have a fascination with death or are just trying to pay the bills, your role is to put to the deceased to rest and give closure to the living. Your duties range from preparing bodies for burial to providing counseling to the relatives of the dearly departed, and at times, you may even be called upon to dig a grave or deliver funeral rites. Due to the nature of your job, you possess a broad knowledge of anatomy, different religious and cultural customs, and many sciences.

While your position is vital to the community, many may see you as a herald of death and may be uneasy in your presence. You symbolize the inevitable, and though your services are invaluable and require a great deal of skill, there are some who view you with an air of bitterness because of what you represent.

Skill Proficiencies: Medicine, Religion
Tool Proficiencies: Herbalism kit
Languages: One of your choice
Equipment: A scroll case full of miscellaneous prayers and notes, five vials of perfume, a set of common clothes, an herbalism kit, a small knife, and 10 gp

Feature: Burial Rites

You are familiar with the religious rites, funerary services, and corpse treatments of most societies. Your experience often results in you having unquestioned access to unsavory places, such as crime scenes and morgues, and your presence in a cemetery or graveyard, or a church or temple attached to such, will not be questioned, so long as your actions or behavior are respectful. In some cases, your medical and anatomical expertise may be called upon to determine the cause and time of death.

Suggested Characteristics

The life of an undertaker is one that is shaped by the constant presence of death. Some may anchor themselves in the religious aspects of the job, seeing themselves as guides to the afterlife and spiritual protectors of the dead. Others view their role as a morbid necessity and focus more on the scientific aspects of the job. In certain communities, the undertaker takes an active role in supporting the relatives of the deceased, counseling them and sharing in their grief. However, the constant proximity to death may leave some undertakers jaded, cold and distant.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I weep at every funeral, even if I have never met the deceased.

5 I am constantly aware of my own mortality, and it terrifies me.
6 I have seen how we all end. Death does not scare me.
7 I try to be kind and sympathetic towards everyone.
8 I have trouble interacting with the living; I prefer the solitude of a quiet graveyard.
d6 Ideal
1 Duty. It is my calling to escort the dead to the afterlife. (Good)
2 Tradition. Rituals bind the generations together, and such traditions must be preserved. (Lawful).
3 Community. If someone does not have family present at their funeral, I will stand at their wake to lay their soul to rest. (Neutral)
4 Waste not, want not. The dead have no need for material goods, so I take whatever I need - or want - from them. (Evil)
5 Luck. Death is random, so live each day as if it were your last. (Chaotic)
6 Equality. We're all equal once we're in the grave. (Any)
d6 Bond
1 I have an affinity for the dead, but I am sworn to hate the undead in all its forms.
2 I am the last person who remembers my hometown's burial rites and traditions.
3 I used my position to fake someone's death. Neither one of us can afford that secret being revealed.
4 My community sees me as an omen of death. Sometimes I wonder if they're right to think so.
5 I was once paid off by a wealthy patron to declare someone's death as natural when it was clearly murder.
6 I once buried the corpse of an unknown traveler. I'm still searching for their identity so that I can truly put them to rest.
d6 Flaw
1 I'll use my position to cover up crimes if enough money is offered.
2 Death is inevitable; I will not go out of my way to prevent someone else dying.
3 I have no problem looting the dead.
4 Grieving people are the easiest to manipulate.
5 For the right price, I'll lie about anything.
6 I've grown desensitized to the horrific and grotesque. If anything, a rotting corpse is interesting to me.
