Runaway Serf

You were born a serf, a social class of people who are only marginally higher than slaves; you were born as an unfree person, and eventually, decided you didn't want to be one anymore, and ran away.  Before you ran away, you were forced to work the field, receiving a small amount of the food you grew to eat.  Growing up, you were perpetually forced to run away, with few no legal protection whatsoever from your lord.  Since then, you have been able to eat better, and to generally be better off than you were before.  As a former serf, you know how bad the feudal system can get, and are generally not to happy to see it working.  You were born a serf, and never want to go back.  You may have escaped any number of ways, but you have evaded capture so far.  Or maybe your lord was glad to see you go, or maybe you are currently being pursued by your former lord's forces.  You know how horrible it is to be forced to work.  One thing is for sure though: you never want to be a serf again.

You have most likely had to evade capture for quite some time.  Maybe you have made it across the border, maybe you are still in hiding.

Skill Proficiencies: Survival, Stealth

Tool Proficiencies: you have proficiency with using any sort of farming tool as a weapon

 

Languages: one of your choice

Equipment: a piece of farming equipment of your choice which doubles as an improvised weapon, a public notice from the noble who used to own you about you running away, a set of traveller's clothes, and a pouch containing 5GP

Suggested Characteristics

Runaway Serfs know what it is like to go hungry, to be abused, they know the worst of the feudal system.  You probably left behind some loved ones,  and burned a few bridges on your way out.  You never want to be a serf again, and want to remain free even if illegally free.  You are probably wary of authority, and have no delusions of chivalry or any sort of nonsense like that. They view everyone who is free more privileged than them, and can be dismissive of the problems of free poor people.

1	Liberty. Nobody should be owned by anybody else (chaotic or good)
2	Equality. Nobles have no reason to be in power and should be taken down (chaotic)
3	Revenge. All lords deserve to be forced to work in the fields with no breaks so they know what it's like to suffer.
4	Education. If everyone learns to read and write, nobody can be enserfed (good)
5	Abolition. I want the king (or whoever) to abolish serfdom. (lawful)
6	Community. One day I will return to my land and free all those who I grew up with. (lawful)

1	My brother who tried to escape with me was caught and is either dead, or still working in the fields.
2	I left a spouse behind with nothing.
3	A couple of friends and I escaped together. I wonder where they are now...
4	I lead was in a revolt that was put down. Some of my childhood friends died there, and some are still imprisoned in a dungeon.

1	I will never believe anything a free person has been through counts as suffering.
2	I will never believe anything anyone who has a shred of authority says is true, in fact, it is most likely the opposite.
3	I will refuse to do anything anyone asks of me if they don't preface it with something that makes it absolutely clear it is optional.

5	I will slit anyone's throat with harvesting equipment if they know I used to be a serf.
