Much like a smith may seek out Dwarves to learn how to smith the finest arms and armour, or one might seek out elves for products of natural beauty or magic, aspiring tinkerers and inventors will seek out the more inventive race of the Gnomes.
You have spent many years in the wonderous and creative presence of the Rock Gnomes, the more engineering and creation-centric of their kin, learning what scraps of information you could in order to demonstrate your worth to the Gnomish Tutors before they would take you on as a student. Over the course of many months or years, you devoted a lot of time to perfecting your interests, hoping to one day turn it into a trade, or at the very least satiate your hunger for knowledge to create as many interesting and wonderous devices that you can.
At the end of your tenure as a student of the ways of engineering, invention and tinkering, you pass through your trials, failures and successes, to the point that your abilities are respected, despite not being of the Gnome kin.
- Skill Proficiencies: Athletics, Perception
- Tool Proficiencies: One type of artisan’s tools
- Languages: Gnomish
- Equipment: A set of artisan’s tools (one of your choice), a certificate of completion of your Apprenticeship, a small emblem marking you a graduate of a Gnomish artificer's school (of your choice, make one up or confer with your DM), a set of traveler’s clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp
While Dwarves might be respected as Weaponsmiths, Armourers and Blacksmiths, Gnomes are respected for their ingenuity, shrewdness, and ability to adapt their environment to their needs through engineering and design. As a graduate of a gnomish Inventor's apprenticeship, you have learned the customs of the Gnomes, as well as earned a modicum of respect by completing schooling thought too complex and intellectual for most other races.
During your studies and training, you discovered an affinity or penchant for working and item creation in one of the following areas of study:
d10 | Artificer Affinity Table |
---|---|
1 | Jack of NO Trades (No particular affinity or strengths) |
2 | Tailoring and Leatherworking |
3 | Alchemy and Chemistry |
4 | Armouring and Weaponsmithing |
5 | Jewellery and Magic Item Creation |
6 | Healing and Medicine |
7 | Engineering and Building Design |
8 | Vehicle Design and Creation |
9 | Experimental Design and Creation |
10 | Jack of all trades (Some of everything) |
While you are not a member of any particular guild, as such, you are still an accredited Gnomish Artificer graduate. This carries with it the recognition of all properly schooled Engineers, Tinkerers and Artificers across the world, or at the very least anywhere Gnomes reside, and have engineers and tinkerers.
Provided that you keep your emblem of accomplishment on your person, it should act as a means to get you access to most Gnomish workshops across the land, and a discount on materials. It may also get you access to whatever designs or blueprints the workshop's owner(s) wish to share. It will also provide you a forum with which you can discuss topics of interests with like-minded individuals, and potentially leads on research, workshop assistants, and the right to invest in development of new projects as a patron.
While it does not include the benefits of a Guild, such as direct political power and influence or other such benefits, the intellectual value as well as the value of all the other resources available makes it worthwhile to keep your name in good standing to the minds of any workshops in cities and towns you happen to visit.
Suggested Characteristics
Artificers are very curious folk, often found poking and prodding at devices until they understand them, then figuring out how to improve it. They sometimes step aside from their workbenches in order to pursue new methods and theories of object creation, or new designs to try. They understand the value of hard work and the importance of community, but they’re vulnerable to sins of greed and covetousness.

While all Engineers and Artificers are well versed in the ways of practical constructions, some gravitate towards theoretical design or research, choosing to design or study the designs of others, and pass them on to be manufactured and developed by others. You personally have very little hand in constructing items, but have an innate mind for the intricacies of design, and often make your mark (and coin) selling the plans to your devices to those looking to make their mark and fortune manufacturing new items.
You may choose to operate independently, meaning your work may be less well known but you would have freedom to direct your own research, or work in some sort of workshop or collective for someone else, and be better known, but not have the freedom to pursue your own designs, other than in your off-time.
Your time spent researching has given you an insight into other avenues of study, as well as access to another language. You will also start with a set of Calligrapher's Supplies, with which you are proficient.
The opposite side of the coin to the Researcher. Some Engineers and Artificers focus all their time and effort on manufacturing, either through love of creation or the relatively simplistic process of mass production. While you are just as well trained as any other Artificer, you do not have an interest in innovation. You spend most of your time creating objects for other people, and are paid well for your services, as operating independently can be costly, although it affords you less freedom in your artifice creation.
You do not have the time or effort to learn other languages, but you have access to more toolkits, are more physically proficient, and have a pouch of gold containing 10gp to reflect the time you've spent manufacturing items for other people.
