You are a magician of the Assembly on Kelewan. Those magicians who have studied and undergone the trials and become Greater Path magicians. They normally reside in the city of Magicians in the north of the Tsuranuanni empire. You had to forswear any family ties at this time and have a unique social rank that set you apart from formal roles. Your word is as law, and their only service was to the Empire.
When Mara of the Acoma rose to power she went to the Thruil Confederation to seek help from the Cho-Ja magicians against the Great One's. During a showdown in the High Council Chambers the magicians protected Mara from the Great One's and she was also protected by the priests who where present at the time. It was then that Mara was able to reveal that for centuries the male Magicians were killing women who showed magical ability. She forced the Great Ones back under the law and made it so that any magic user could train at the Assembly or not but it would be their individual decision.
Now you are learning to live within the law and at times it is a struggle, on Kelewan thousands of years of tradition mean that most commoners will defer to your will without thinking. However, nobles and priests now treat you with respect for your powers as a practitioner of the Greater Path but no more. On Midkemia, it is even worse, there magicians are all but treated with contempt and prejudice.

Though others must often endure extensive interviews to gain access to even the most common archives in Stardock, you have free and easy access to the majority of the academy, though it might also have repositories of lore that are too valuable, magical, or secret to permit anyone immediate access. You have a working knowledge of the Academy personnel and bureaucracy, and you know how to navigate those connections with some ease. Additionally, you are likely to gain preferential treatment at other libraries across the Midkemia, as professional courtesy shown to a fellow magician.
Alternatively, if the campaign takes place on the world of Kelewan, you would have free access and membership of the Assembly of Magicians.
Suggested Characteristics
Use the tables for the sage background in the Player's Handbook as the basis for your traits and motivations, modifying the entries when appropriate to suit your identity as a Great One. Your bond is almost certainly associated either with the place where you grew up or with the knowledge you hope to acquire through adventuring. Your ideal is no doubt related to how you view the quest for knowledge and truth- perhaps as a worthy goal in itself, or maybe as a means to a desirable end.
