Beloved Construct (Warforged) Image

You were once merely an animated construct created by a gifted magic user in order to assist with their craft.

Without a spark of real life or a soul, you were no better than the other tools in the workshop, but your creator, with no children of their own, became endeared to you. Over time, your creator, out of love for their creation, became determined to give you the gift of life.

After years of research and experimentation, your creator finally succeeded. You awoke, impossibly alive and in possesion of your own soul. Your creator adopted you as an apprentice, teaching you beginnings of their craft with the hope of leaving you as their successor when they are long gone.

Though your life did not begin until you were given a soul, you sometimes have flashes of a life before: of working at a forge, of transcribing notes or spells, of your creator's warm smile.

Languages: You are able to speak and understand two languages known to your creator.
Equipment: One set of Artisan's Tools, an Arcane Focus, and a pouch containing 25gp.

A Token from Home

You carry one small item with you that is a cherished memory of the home you found with your creator.

Due to the unique nature of your existence, there are many magic users who would seek to study you. At your DM's discretion, they might be persuaded to assist you with small requests in exchange for a few hours of your time for research.

Suggested Characteristics

Life and the world around you is new and at times confusing. How does your character respond to this newness after being shaped by your creator?

d8 Personality Trait
1 I grapple with the implications of my creation. Does my soul belong to me? Or, was it stolen from another fate to then inhabit my form?
2 I desire to experience all the emotions life has to offer.
3 I am still child-like in my wonder of the things I encounter on my journey and I have very little practical experience in navigating different societies.
4 I am my own person. I become easily angered if someone issues one too many commands.
5 I am obsessed with artistic expression as it is something I don’t fully understand. I seek to absorb any poetry, novel, painting, or drawing I encounter.
6 I always volunteer to cook because eating is necessary for all other living creatures, but, because I have no sense of taste, there is a high chance that whatever I make is inedible.
7 I seek adventure to learn what it means to be alive.
8 I’ve embraced my created existence. I am alive and I see no difference between me and the people around me.
d6 Ideal
1 Respect. Living creatures deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. (Good)
2 Fairness. No one should get preferential treatment over another, and no one is above the law. (Lawful)
3 Freedom. Living creatures are endowed with a free will that should never be taken from them. Tyrants cannot be allowed to oppress the people. (Chaotic)
4 Might. If I become strong, I can take what I want—what I deserve. (Evil)
5 Sincerity. There’s no good in pretending to be something I’m not. (Neutral)
6 Focus. Nothing and no one can steer me away from achieving my life’s work. (Any)
d6 Bond
1 I’ve been searching my whole life for the answer to a certain question.
2 My life’s work is a series of tomes related to a specific field of lore.
3 My existence offended a religious group back home, which has made life difficult for my creator. I feel now that I can’t go home without proving the validity of my existence.
4 My creator has grown too old to venture forth to seek knowledge on their latest area of research. I left home to do the research in their stead and ensure that the task is accomplished before they pass away.
5 Having been gifted real life, I owe my creator a debt that I could never repay.
6 My tools are symbols of the life I was gifted, and I carry them so that I will never forget my roots.
d8 Flaw
1 I don’t fully understand the people around me and their over-expressive natures, so I often misunderstand social cues.
2 I resent being compared to non-sentient constructs and tend to over-assert my opinions so that those around me know that I answer to no one.
3 I have no understanding of mortality, so I tend to forget to protect myself and often end up in dangerous situations.
4 I secretly resent the people around me for the ease with which they are able to embrace and express their feelings.
5 I’d risk too much to uncover a lost bit of knowledge.
6 Most people scream and run when they see a demon. I stop and take notes on its anatomy.
7 I speak without really thinking through my words, invariably insulting others.
8 I can’t keep a secret to save my life, or anyone else’s.
