You grew up in a human city (or other goodly race). You had to keep to the shadows and hide in undesirable places, but you made your way alright thanks to some sneaking and a few connections in the general population.
When you choose this background, work with your DM to determine which city you've originated from. Maybe there are stories about a beastie in the sewers or monsters in the alleys that relate to you.

- Equipment: Common clothes, A pet pigeon, rat, or squirrel. A pouch of 10 gp.
In your home town, or in a town of similar wealth and design you can navigate around without being detected and without getting lost. You get advantage on stealth checks while in these towns and are able to locate anything within the town (as long as it exists within that town) on an advantage survival check.

- Lived in the sewers, maybe alone or with a small band.
- Always on the move, sleeping under any porch or in any cellar you could find.
- Someone took you in, you lived in relative comfort in a real house, maybe even with a real bed.
What did you do to get by in the town?
- Salvaging scraps of food or vermin, picking pockets.
- Worked in the criminal underworld as part of a thieves guild or the like.
- Kept as a pet by a wealthy merchant. His little daughter thought you were cute. She calls you Mr Fuzzles, but eh you get free food out of it.
