Betrayed Image

You spent your previous years in the service of a temple, order, government entity, or academic institution of some sort. You acted as an intermediary between the realm of the holy and the mortal world, became a beloved champion of the people, a prominent military figurehead, helped govern a nation, or perhaps molded young minds at a mage college -- but whatever it was, you gave your life over to a cause greater than yourself.  Until you were betrayed by those you trusted most.

Choose an institution -- church, state, or academia -- and work with your DM to detail the nature of your service.  Were you a lesser functionary in a temple, or raised from childhood to assist in the rule of nations? Were you a member of a mercenary band, a crusader in an order of paladins?  Perhaps you were a conniving member of an order of mages, vying for privilege and power amongst your peers?  You could have been a member of a cult outside of any established temple structure, or maybe even a fanatic occultist that served a fiendish master that eventually turned on you.

Whatever you were, you were betrayed, cast out, and barred from your previous life and society.  What will you do now?  Where will you go?  Everything you ever worked for was just ripped from your hands.  How will you survive?

Having seen the light side and dark side of your type of institution, you know hypocrisy when you hear it.  You gain advantage on any insight checks against members of your type of institution to see if they're speaking truthfully.  Your DM will ultimately determine if the speaker qualifies as someone who would relate to your background.

Suggested Characteristics
