You have been deaf-mute since birth. As a result, your other senses have become highly refined and sensitive. With this background, your ability to perceive the world around you through sight, smell, taste, and touch is excellent.
- Skill Proficiencies:
(Pick Two): Perception, Insight, Investigation, Sleight of Hand.
- Tool Proficiencies: Calligrapher's Supplies.
- Languages: You are unable to speak any language, but you understand the written forms of your native language(s) and you know Signed Common, a 3-D language using the hands.
- Equipment: A calligraphy set, a set of common clothes, a trinket of the player's choice, and a pouch containing 10 GP.
As a deaf person, you have come to rely on your sight and other senses to remain aware of your surroundings, and you are not shackled by the limits of vocal communication.
- Immune to the Deafened condition.
- You do not use any verbal commands in your spellcasting, replacing all verbal components with somatic gestures. If a spell requires a creature to hear you or understand you, the spell automatically fails.
- Spells and effects that require the creature to hear the caster have no effect on this creature. Examples include Suggestion, Command, and Vicious Mockery.
- You can lipread up to 30ft away, as long as you can see the face of the creature talking.
Checks & Saving Throws:
- Permanent advantage on Sleight of Hand checks.
- Permanent advantage on perception checks that rely specifically on sight, smell, taste, or touch (within reach of 5 ft. for taste and touch).
- Automatically fails checks and saving throws that rely solely/primarily on sound.
- Disadvantage on stealth checks related to moving and making noise.
- If other creatures do not understand Signed Common and you can't write words down, you can attempt to mime. Doing so requires you to make a successful Performance check (DC 13) and the "listeners"/watchers to make successful Insight checks (DC 13) to get your meaning. Complex ideas cannot be communicated this way.
Combat:
- Vulnerable to damage taken while under the Blinded Condition.
- No penalty to general attack, spell, damage, and defense rolls.
- Shouted information (like a BBEG weakness) does not make it to you, unless a party member uses Signed Common or it is obvious enough.
Suggested Characteristics
You rely heavily on your sight, and probably grew up somewhat lonely due to the rarity of others knowing Common Sign or even attempting to communicate with you.
