Armada Deserter Image

You joined the Armada seeking an easy life in the Sapphire Sea, or perhaps you were born into it, your parents members of the Admiralty or the Armada forces. Either way, you've decided that this life isn't for you. You've decided to seek a new life amongst the free peoples of the Dark Waters. But the Armada doesn't let go easy and leaves its mark on deserters, in more ways than one.

Armada Deserter is a background option for elf, human, goliath, dwarf or half-elf characters. Other races may be part of the Armada, but are not treated as harshly for fleeing their posting.

Skill Proficiencies: Athletics and deception
Tool Proficiencies: Navigator’s tools, vehicles (water)
Languages: Common (the language of the Armada enlisted) and Elvish (the 'official' language of the Armada)
Equipment: A rapier (or other similiar sword) stolen from an officer, a trinket such as a piece of knotted rope (or you may roll for a random trinket on the Trinkets table in chapter 5 of the Players Handbook), a set of common clothes with the addition of one piece of fancy attire (such as a hat, belt or gloves), and a pouch containing 20 gp

Deserter's Mark

Deserter's are never welcome back into the Armada, but that doesn't mean they don't seek those out that abandon their post. Fleeing the Admiralty leaves its mark, literally. Your deserter's mark, a brand, scar or other disfigurement, will depend on your race.

d4 Deserter's Mark
1 Branded Wrist (Human) - You've had brand burned on the inside of your wrist, often a 'D' but sometimes the crest of the captain of the ship you deserted
2 Split Ears (Elf/Half-Elf) - The tops of your ears have been split so they fork, marking you as no longer and officer of the Armada.
3 Missing Fingers (Dwarf) - The last two fingers of your dominant hand have been cleaved at the lowest knuckle, making working with tools a much more difficult task.
4 Facial Scar (Goliath) - Several scars have been drawn across your tribal markings on your face and left to fester, forever disfiguring your family marks.

Feature: Stolen Knowledge

When you fled the Armada, you took with you some knowledge of its inner workings. In addition to knowledge of the general runnings of the Admiralty, you have some specific information relating to your role within it.

When in any of the four City Isles, you have an extra insight into the workings of the city and how to avoid drawing the attention of the authorities. Additionally, depending on your race, you had extra knowledge of a specific area of the Armada:

Elf: You are knowledgeable of the command structure and hierarchy of the Armada.

Human: You have information on the military runnings of the fleets and their tactics.

Dwarf: You are particularly informed about Armada weapons, ships and technologies.

Goliath: Your background as a slave in the Armada means you have access to rumours and other hidden knowledge.

Half-Elf: Pick either the elf or human option.
