You've spent a lot of your life in and around inns and taverns, whether as a server, cook, bouncer or even as the owner of such an establishment. This has left you with a keen insight into the kinds of people who frequent inns and taverns and how to convince them that yours is the best in town. Regardless of your actual station, you likely had to fill a variety of roles depending on the number of patrons and who was actually working on any particular day, giving you a rounded set of skills. No matter how comfortable your life was, however, something drew you away from the business and into adventuring. What was it? Do you intend to ever go back?

Tool Proficiencies: You are proficient in either brewer's supplies or cook's utensils.
Languages: All kinds of people visit inns and taverns and you've picked up the language of a particular group who were especially common in yours. Choose one additional language that your character would have learned from the patrons of their establishment.

Type of Inn/Tavern

There are many different kinds of establishments that fall under the broad category of an inn/tavern. Determine what the one you worked at was like and what kind of people frequented it, or roll a d8 on the table below.

d6 Type of Inn/Tavern
1 Traveller's Waystop
2 Small Town Pub
3 Criminal's Hangout
4 Refined Establishment
5 Working Man's Tavern
6 Favoured by Adventurers

Feature: Asking The Right Questions

You know what kinds of inns are frequented by various groups, and you know the right questions to ask in order to find them. If you spend at least 1 hour asking around in any settlement with more than one tavern or inn, you learn the names and locations of several popular establishments (the exact number is determined by the DM) as well as: how much a room and/or meal in each costs, what kind of groups (races, factions, social classes, etc.) frequent each, and if any notable/well-known people frequent any of them.

Suggested Characteristics

A good member of an inn's staff doesn't have to be inherently sociable but should be able to turn on the charm in order to get what they want, be it persuading someone to buy a room for the night or calming a group of rowdy patrons. The nature of their job also means they will have likely met many different people from many different walks of life, shaping their view of the world and how they see others in one way or another.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I love to make people laugh, and I have no shortage of jokes.
2 I can tell you the exact year a drink was brewed from the taste alone.
3 I'm used to having to raise my voice in order to be heard.
4 I believe most disputes can be solved with a good drink and a conversation.
5 I'm very neat and tidy, and I have the instinctual urge to clean any sort of mess I see.
6 I've got a plethora of (mostly fake) stories that I like to tell whenever I get the chance.
7 I'm very good at plastering on a fake smile and nodding along with whatever anyone's saying.
8 I've got no patience for people who treat serving staff badly.
d6 Ideal
1 Respect. Everyone is deserving of respect, regardless of anything else. (Good)
2 Importance. I want to be known all across the land for my deeds. (Neutral)
3 Greed. Money makes the world go round, and I intend to get as much of it as possible. (Evil)
4 Community. The well-being of my community is the most important thing in the world to me, rather than any lofty ideals. (Lawful)
5 Independence. Everyone should be free to seek their own fortune. (Chaotic)

6 I'm set to inherit the inn I worked at after the current owner dies.
d6 Flaw
1 I've got a penchant for drinking, often to my own detriment.
2 I am uncompromisingly stingy with money.
3 I'm terrified of someone discovering how I came to own my inn, and would do anything to protect that secret.
4 I committed a deed so terrible that I can never go home again. I don't regret it.
