You were a god, an ancient being, who, for some reason is now in a mortal body. Perhaps you were forced into a mortal shell by some other entity, perhaps you wished to help out your followers, or maybe you just wanted to experience the mortal world. Whatever the reason, you are now in the mortal plane, an ancient mind trapped in an at least relatively young body (what's a 500-year-old elven body when your mind is millennia old?).
Sub-origin: Trickery
You were a god of trickery, well-versed in the arts of deception and subterfuge. The extent of your trickery is up to you; were you a simple prankster or were you a manipulator, moving other gods like pawns? You are also much more likely to be trapped in a mortal body because of another angry god or goddess.
- Skill Proficiencies: Your divine mind stays much the same. You have proficiency in History or Religion.
You have eons of practice in deception and trickery. You have proficiency in Deception and Sleight of Hand.
- Tool Proficiencies: You have proficiency in the use of Thieves' Tools and Disguise Kit.
- Languages: You are fluent in Celestial, Infernal or Primordial as well as one other language of your choice.
- Equipment: A Holy Symbol (spellcasting focus if you are a spellcaster), Thieves' Tools, Disguise Kit
As a god, you have divine friends and enemies. Certain gods may actively be trying to prevent you from regaining your divine status while others may be convinced to help you. You can also seek out your own followers, although convincing them that you are their deity may prove difficult.

You can show vestiges of your former power. You can cast Thaumaturgy at will. (I couldn't find a way to add this to the background so it just expands your spell list I guess.)

Suggested Characteristics
Your personality, ideals and flaws depend on what kind of god you were, although most gods seem to share a haughty attitude towards mortals. Your motivations can range from regaining your power to simply experiencing everything the mortal world has to offer.
Also, think about what happens when you die. If you did this willingly, you might regain your divine form or drift around until you find a new body or create one yourself. If you were unwilling or forced into this body, dying might kill you outright.
