Reconnaissance has been your life for as long as you care to remember. You trained as a youth, studied the art of stealth and hiding, learned basic tracking techniques, including how to stay alive in the wilds.
You might have been part of a standing army or a mercenary company, or perhaps a member of a local adventurers guild; anyone or anything that was in need of information about a specified location and the area around it.
- Skill Proficiencies: Athletics and choose 1 more from Survival or Insight
- Tool Proficiencies: Make your choice:
cartographer's tool or woodcarver's tools
herbalism kit or woodcarver's tools
disguise kit or woodcarver's tools - Equipment: An insignia of rank, a memento taken from a fallen comrade (a dagger, broken blade, or piece of a banner), a spyglass, a set of traveler's clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp
During your time as a Scout, you had a specific role to play in your unit, army or organization. Roll a d8 or choose from the options in the table below to determine your role:
Long-Range Reconnaissance = scouting deep in enemy-held territory for a long amount of time
Pointman = You take the lead position of a small patrol
Border Guard = You guard the border and make regular patrols along that border
Warden = You watch over a forest, estate or road
Guide = You bring anyone from point A to B
Pathfinder = You accompany a party into the unknown
Tracker = You can find man and animal in the wilds
Cartographer = You map regions and areas for a living

You have an excellent memory for maps and geography, and you can always recall the general layout of terrain, settlements, and other features around you. In addition, you can find food and fresh water for yourself and up to five other people each day, provided that the land offers berries, small game, water, and so forth.
Suggested Characteristics
While they embrace it in the field, Scouts often try to break away from the stigma of being mysterious loners. A key aspect which all Scouts are taught from the beginning is to maintain clear lines of communication with their squad and to relay what they find back to the base of operations. They frequently walk the fine line between risking themselves for the sake of solid intel, and trying to stay alive long enough to report back. When required however, Scouts are some of the most fearsome and experienced killers, given their trust in the most deadly of weapons: Patience and Time.

Posted May 31, 2022I like this background but I think it could use some refinement. For example, the role of your scout table is interesting but doesn't add anything mechanical and feels a lot like the bond, flaw, etc... tables. I think reworking it to fit into those tables would make more sense. Also, I like giving a choice of proficiency instead of just saying you get these 2 but I think Survival should be a given because of your Wanderer feature. Since the scout can forage for food for up to 5 people, Survival seems like a requirement. Perhaps you could give a choice of role which comes with the second proficiency and a small feature. For instance, your pathfinder gives Survival Proficiency and the ability to forage for the party? Then again, at that point maybe you should just have a separate background or a variant.
