
You are haunted by something so terrible that you dare not speak of it. You’ve tried to bury it and run away from it, to no avail. Whatever this thing is that haunts you can’t be slain with a sword or banished with a spell. It might come to you as a shadow on the wall, a bloodcurdling nightmare, a memory that refuses to die, or a demonic whisper in the dark. The burden has taken its toll, isolating you from most people and making you question your sanity. You must find a way to overcome it before it destroys you.

Trading companies are an integral part of the Shattered Lands, and they facilitate trade between nations by sea and land. Trading companies are powerful entities, and the largest ones essentially operate outside of the control of any government.
As an established and respected member of a trading company, you can rely on certain benefits that membership provides. Other members of the trading company will provide you with lodging and food if necessary, and, depending on your rank in the company will give it for free or at a reduced price. Depending on the size and extent of the trading company, you may only find trading company members and offices in certain regions or you may find them almost anywhere. To make use of this benefit, you be in a location that your trading company operates.
Trading company offices offer a central place to meet other members of your profession, or may be used to meet potential patrons, allies, adversaries or hirelings.
Trading companies often wield tremendous political power. If you are accused of a crime, your trading company will support you if a good case can be made for your innocence or the crime is justifiable. You can also gain access to powerful political figures through the trading company in areas the trading company operates. Such connections require that you are in good standing with the trading company and might require the donation of money or magic items.
You have a keen understanding of the economy, especially as it relates to the area of expertise your trading company focuses on. You know the best places to buy and sell, based on the supply and demand, and how much goods are worth. If you don't sell an item yourself, you usually know who does.
To remain in good standing, you must pay dues of 5 gold pieces per month and take on jobs as directed. Dues are generally taken out of your regular pay, but, if you are not in direct service to the trading company for some period of time, you must find a way to make your payments, including back dues.
