Whether you were a chieftain, hunter-gatherer, protector, father, mother, son, daughter of your tribe, the spirit of the forest has always spoken to you. And in it, you have always felt at home. The magic of nature reached out to you at a young age, bestowed you with gifts, and guided you on your path as its chosen protector. You have grown up in nature’s warm embrace, protecting the forest in which you live, it's people, and it's creatures. Communing with nature has opened your perception and given you a deep and meaningful relationship with all its flora and fauna. And while you are there to protect them, they teach and protect you as well. While making your rounds at one point you came upon a stranger that gave you information of a relic that is sacred to your people. While skeptical of the stranger’s information, you could not ignore the possibility of it being true. You set out with a handful of fighters to obtain the relic; while the relic was not there, you found evidence that it was at some point.
Making the return trip to your people, you see columns of smoke rising from your home. Racing back, the devastation you come upon is staggering. You are barely able to help a few creatures escape the blaze. You and your companions watch the grove burn through tear flooded eyes. Through the still smoldering remains of the grove you find the bodies of your people strewn along the ground and outside of homes. You confirm that there were no survivors and provide your people, and family, a proper burial. With anger and grief encompassing you and the remaining members of your tribe, you set off to track down the culprit and exact your revenge upon them.
You manage to track down the group that slaughtered your people and engage in combat without hesitation. You see now the true source of destruction; the very relic that you had been sent to reclaim. Your party is decimated one by one, murdered by the relic they held sacred. Before the relic can be turned on you a creature of the grove surprises your enemy with an intervening attack; allowing you to make your escape. Your despair deepens as the revelation washes over you that you have failed your family, your people, and all of the creatures of the Grove. After several days of anguish and self loathing, you begin again on your path to vengeance. You head to villages, towns, and cities seeking allies to hunt down your enemy and reclaim the relic in honor of all who fell in the Grove. You are vengeance bound.

A creature of the grove has come to your aid as an animal guide. Choose a beast that has a challenge rating of 0. Your guide serves as a companion through the wilderness, but does not fight for you and will not perform any obvious dangerous tasks for you. They can stand guard of your camp and alert you to anything in the area using their perception. They can perform other mundane tasks (up to the discretion of the DM) like carrying messages to friendly parties. If the beast is in a dangerous situation, it will flee.
If the beast dies, you can obtain another one by spending 12 hours bonding with another beast that isn't hostile to you.
Suggested Characteristics
Your characteristics should reflect the experience of loss, distrust, and hatred. As time progressed after your entire tribe was slaughtered by a stranger, your character would distrust all strangers at first. It would be difficult for party members to gain your trust; but not impossible. Characters with similar experiences, spending long periods of time trying to know your character, and those that have fought in battle with you have greater chances of earning your trust.
Enemies that harm those you have befriended are more likely to gain your attention in combat.
