In one way or another you have been forced into servitude. (POW, Shanghaied, Prisoner of raiders/slavers etc). You served more or less cruel taskmasters on a seagoing vessel for years. In that time, you might have faced down mighty storms, monsters of the deep, famine, abuse and those who wanted to sink your masters craft to the bottomless depths. Your have somehow escaped the bond of servitude. Rescued by authorities/Adventurers, survival of a seawreckage, earned your freedom or just plain escaped.
How deep is your hatred of your taskmasters, has you forgiven or maybe even adapted and joined your tormentors.
