Ambassador/Envoy Image

You spent time in the service of your home town, city, region, or nation, as an emissary to a foreign power.  You may have chosen this life, inherited it, or had it thrust upon you, or perhaps you earned your appointment or perhaps it was a reciprocal favor for a noble relative.  There are many ways you could have ended up with an ambassadorship, but however it came to be, the outcome is the same: you've spent much of your adult life in a foreign land representing the interests of your homeland.  Speaking and conforming to local customs either came naturally or had to be learned, but you've become adept at it.  You strike a fine balance between honoring your own customs and respecting those of your hosts. As a representative of a foreign interest, you are often shown ceremonial respect but seldom trusted.  Sometimes ambassadors are granted protections, like diplomatic immunity, and sometimes not depending on the culture to which they are assigned.

Skill Proficiencies: As an ambassador your strength may be your knowledge of local history, or it may your expertise at reading, persuading, or deceiving.  Choose one skill from Intelligence(History), Charisma(Deception), Charisma(Persuasion), or Wisdom(Insight).
Tool Proficiencies: Depending on the nature of your role as ambassador, you may have been called upon to be expert at writing, forgery, or even disguise. Choose one tool proficiency from calligrapher's supplies,  disguise kit, forgery kit, or thieves' tools.
Languages: You fluently speak the language of the area, nation, or people to whom you represent your home.  If you already know that language, select one from a neighboring ally or enemy.
Equipment: An ambassador is often given some badge of office and is expected to dress to impress.  You may have a ceremonial weapon, a sash, or some form of jewelry like a medallion or ring.

Feature: Aide

As a diplomat, you were assigned a personal aide.  This aide will run errands for you, serve as valet, and perform other administrative tasks.  They are, however, a zero-level NPC that will not fight and will quit your service if put in mortal danger.

(DMs may choose to make the ambassador's aide a classed NPC at their discretion.)

Suggested Characteristics

Your strengths and motivations may be along the lines of bringing people together and forging peace, or they may be a long con to try to get as much out of them as possible.  Perhaps you're trying to steal state secrets, or forge a military alliance.  What characteristics brought you to ambassadorship, or have you developed as a result of your assignment?

d8 Personality Trait
1 There's nothing I enjoy more than feeding a haughty noble or official misinformation and having them believe it.
2 I love being pampered and given gifts because of my privileged position and if you don't fork out I'll think less of you.
3 I love small talk and can spend hours just sharing interesting but unimportant stories over good food and fine wine.
4 My position demands respect, and I've come to expect it from everyone I meet.
5 When negotiations get contentious, I tend to break the tension with an off-color joke.
6 Knowledge is power. Whenever I'm going into a serious summit or negotiation I'll spend all my available time learning about the topics likely to be discussed and, more importantly, the people who will be discussing them.
7 I suffer the boredom of long meetings and negotiations so I can get access to national treasures and steal them - whether those treasures are physical or intellectual.
8 Mostly I use my rank and privilege to impress the gentlemen/ladies. Illicit trysts are fun, and can be useful for later blackmail.
d6 Ideal
1 Duty. Protecting and advancing my nation's interests is my most important responsibility - whether I agree with it or not. (Lawful)
2 Wealth. I use my position to amass personal wealth and make business connections to exploit. I won't think twice about wielding my nation's influence for personal gain. (Evil)
3 Altruism. Everything I do, I do to improve the lives of the common folk - whether negotiating peace, trade, or charitable endeavors. (Good)
4 Discord. Sometimes I like to change positions in a debate or steer discussions off-course just to throw off my adversaries. (Chaotic)
5 Affinity. I'll only fight for causes I believe in. (Neutral)
6 Purpose. I do this because it's necessary. Maintaining relations between governments is crucial and I'm glad to be a part of it. (Any)
d6 Bond
1 I was appointed by someone with aspirations to my nation's highest office and I must do all I can to help him achieve that goal.
2 I am ambassador to a nation I love more than my own and would do almost anything to become a citizen.
3 My greatest love is money, and I'll take every opportunity to get it.
4 I learned something terrible that I shouldn't know and was sent here so I couldn't reveal it. One day I'll find a way to expose the truth.
5 I took this position to impress my family. Family is everything.
6 I couldn't do this without my faithful aide. They are the most important person in the world to me.
d6 Flaw
1 Though often given respect, I am seldom given trust. I've come to expect this from everyone, assuming I'm being fed lies and propaganda whenever I'm spoken to.
2 I take even the smallest slight as a major affront and will plot subtle but severe revenge...and my grudges are long-lasting.
3 My frequent attendance of diplomatic festivities and political favors has left me addicted to drugs, alcohol, carnal pleasures, gambling, or some other vice.
4 My position is critical to my nation and to the world. I spend all my time with nobility, officials, and royalty. I am better than you because of it.
5 My job requires me to be guarded, evasive, and circumspect about everything, and this carries into my personal relationships.
6 I disdain overt acts of violence as clumsy, barbaric, and beneath sophisticated people such as myself.
