Returned Image

Death has taken you in your journey through the living world. Your soul would have been trapped for endless eternity had it not been for the Passage of Phenax. The identity you once held also vanished leaving no memory behind. The essence of who you were remains, yet you’ve no recollection of how you arrived in the mortal realm or the way in which you’ve acquired your skills.

The Returned have lost their ability to form lifelong memories, such that relationships are based upon, and are hindered from building a new life upon their return from the Underworld. At the dawn of each week, your memories of places past, new connections, and activities begun will fade. You can not form bonds.

Unliving, yet not devoid of thought, The Returned are deathtouched reflections of who you once were. Food is no longer a necessity for survival, only water and the breath of false life. Upon reentry to the living realm, they are not truly alive. The Returned form communities, experience fleeting emotions, and follow daily routines; but their existence is a shadow play, because without an identity or an ability to nurture meaningful relationships, the elements of their "lives" have no weight or substance.

The Returned not only think, but also feel. Despite a lack of memory surrounding past experiences, they retain emotion based upon them. This leaves them with a darkness in their soul with emotions such as frustration, bitterness, loneliness, resentment, anger, and sorrow.

Skill Proficiencies: The Passage of Phenax has made you tougher while stripping you of emotion and a soul. Gain proficiency in Survival. You can not gain benefits in History.
Languages: You know the languages you have from your race. If you do not have common, gain Common.
Equipment: You carry with you the robes of the underworld and the Gold Mask you forged before taking your journey back to the mortal realm.

Feature: Mask of the Returned

When a human dies on Theros, a funerary mask of dark clay is customary, used to "frame" the identity of the deceased for Athreos. So when a mortal destroys his or her identity to leave the Underworld, that mortal must fashion a mask to stand in for it. Gold is the most common material in Erebos's realm, so it has become customary for the Returned to symbolically replace their funerary masks (and by proxy their identities) with beautifully crafted gold masks that cover their changed faces and function as surrogate, albeit flimsy, identities.

d5 Feature: Mask of the Returned
1 Mask of the Jester, Gain proficiency in Performance
2 Mask of the Tyrant, Gain proficiency in Persuasion
3 Mask of the Cyclops, Gain proficiency in Intimidation
4 Mask of the Knight, Gain proficiency in Insight
5 Mask of the Raven, Gain proficiency in Arcana

Feature: Dark Clay

Because gold is commonplace in the Underworld, the Returned don't value it (except their own masks) and instead use special clay pieces called ostraka as a kind of currency or barter tool. Each ostrakon is a shard from a dark clay funerary mask. These pieces of clay have great significance to the Returned for obvious reasons, and they are used as mementos by inhabitants of the necropolis of Asphodel, as trophies by those of Odunos, and as ornamentation and currency by all of their kind.

You start your journey with 10 of these ostraka pieces. In your journey you can trade with other returned and the merchant will always divulge what it knows about the world.

Suggested Characteristics

The Returned are lost and confused. Longing for the life they once had returned tend to find some comfort in being around others who share same ideals though do not understand why. Some returned spend their days exhaustively searching the world for their eidolon yearning to be whole again.

d4 Personality Trait
1 I find myself uneasy and cant stay in one spot for too long.
2 I do not speak with words and only use hand motions to communicate.
3 My new life is mine to choose what I do. I will make a path for myself.
4 The mortal realm is not what it should be and needs to be cleansed.
d4 Ideal
1 Anographer- Scribe of the Returned. On anything I can write on, I account fragments of memories, names and places that come in dreams. I understand the deeper meanings of these fragments and help other returned order their fragmented memories. (Good)
2 Gray Merchant - Traders know me by my hooded gray cloak. Every trinket in the world is valuable and mine. I carry as much as I can and take it all with me on my travels. There is no rhyme or reason to what I seek but I seek it still. (Neutral)
3 Kakomanteis - Before I returned I was a spell caster this much I know. Holding onto spells from your past I channel magic not through mana, but the sacrifice of others. I keep small animals and bugs to use as components for my spells. (Chaotic)
4 Palamnite - I am not feeble and quiet like other Returned. I am fearless and full of rage because of what I can't remember. I am a vicious killer and destroy everything that which does not bring me joy. (Evil)
d4 Flaw
1 I am haunted by my past and the fragmented memories that come to me in your dreams. I will stop at nothing to figure out who I once was.
2 The Mortal world is not how I thought I left it. No one can be trusted especially those closest to me.
3 I take what is mine and I keep what I kill. The world is a game and I do as you wish.
4 My memory is weaker than other returned. I can not remember names or places and am doomed to wander not knowing anything more than what is in front of me. I can not form connections.
