
A guild of planar travellers a few hundred years ago came together to form a guild called the Warfarers, known to keep a hoard of tuning forks that are attuned to all manner of planes, cities and demiplanes all across the multiverse, both known and unknown. Outsiders may be able to buy or hire them...though only for a great cost.
As frequent travellers to the outer spoke city of Sigil, a Wayfarer is often found in service to a ruler or council, keeping them informed of any goings on in the other planes that may affect their patrons, including the use of their ability to spy through the Ethereal Plane.
Many Wayfarers come from races not generally accepted in common Material Plane societies, which includes: Half breeds such as half elves and half orcs, Changelings, neutrally aligned Yuan-ti, Kalashtar, Shifters, Warforged, Gith, Simic and Vedalken. By definition all fully fledged Wayfarer guild members must be of a true neutral alignment if they wish to traverse both upper and lower realms in comfort.
Entrance to this guild is always via apprenticeship, generally lasting for a minimum of 5 years in Material Plane time, often lasting longer in order to ensure that the knowledge of how to integrate seamlessly with every society of the many planes is imparted.
Not all Wayfarers are magic users, through the aid of magical items imparted by the guild they travel the planes for many purposes, befitting almost any class.
If choosing this background you can choose to be either a fully fledged guild member or a drop out apprentice which will provide different levels of proficiencies as stated below.
- Skill Proficiencies: For apprentice: Insight, Perception
For guild member: History, Persuasion
- Languages: For apprentice: any two standard languages
For guild members: any two standard languages, plus one exotic language
- Equipment: A symbol of rank and guild membership (apprentice or higher), a notebook filled with descriptions of various planar customs, an Amulet of the Planes, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 15 gp.
As a migrant or traveller between the planes, it's hard to find a safe place to rest. Through connections provided by the Wayfarer guild, you are able to find an Inn in any city or town with the symbol of Saint Christopher above their door as a place for safe rest for yourself or your party. You can be assured uninterrupted rest for the night, under the blessing of Saint Christopher, patron saint of travellers.
Suggested Characteristics
Wayfarers are often people seeking some form of escape, or running from something known or unknown, often there will be something dark in a Wayfarers part or a permeating feeling of 'not belonging'. They may also be driven in the pursuit of more knowledge, and a silver tongue that translated across the planes. Your ideals, bonds and flaws will reflect this motivation.
