Almost all of the common people and other folk that one might encounter along the back roads and away from the major cities have one thing in common: they live out their lives without ever traveling more than a few miles from where they were born.
You come from one of those places. A small holding, village or farmstead where people live, marry someone local and never see the other side of the mountain.
You are from a small village, one so small that few have even heard of it. Chances are good that even if some people you meet have heard of your village, they only know the name and perhaps even stayed at what passes for an inn. You saw a chance to escape the confines of the village and leapt, becoming an adventurer.
Although you are unfamiliar with some of the ways people act, you can also be sure that some things its people take for granted will be new to you. Things you have only heard about or even wonders that you’ve never dared dream of. You are always very keen and observant to catch sight of something unknown. By the same token, you’re a person of interest, for good or ill, to those around you almost anywhere you go.

- Languages: Work with your DM to determine a Language of people of your village would have traded/ had relations with.
- Equipment: One set of traveler’s clothes, any one musical instrument, or gaming set or tool set you are proficient with, a simple weapon, and a pouch containing 10 gp
A villager might have set out on a journey for one of a number of reasons, and the departure from his or her village could have been voluntary or involuntary. To determine why you are so far from home, roll on the table below or choose from the options provided. The following section, discussing possible villages, includes some suggested reasons that are appropriate for each location.
d6 | Why did you leave? |
---|---|
1 | Trader |
2 | Exile |
3 | Fugitive |
4 | Pilgrim |
5 | Sightseer |
6 | Wanderer |
Your mannerisms, figures of speech, even possibly accent and perhaps even your appearance all mark you as someone from the country. Curious glances are directed your way because you are different.
Because you are different people tend to take you as naive. You can use their under estimation of you to your advantage. You gain advantage on persuasion any time you are bargaining with someone (after all someone from a small village knows the value of the goods they are buying).
