Botanist Image

You've spent many years studying plants; those grown in decorative gardens as well as those only found deep in the forests. While each botanist will have a favored subfield, you all share an appreciation for mother nature and her many wonders. Capable of taking your fieldwork to almost every part of the globe, you'll find few climates that aren't of interest.

Possible side effects include poison ivy; stinging nettle; anaphylaxis; general pokes, cuts, bruises, and death; and being better at talking to plants than talking to people.

Skill Proficiencies: Nature, Perception
Tool Proficiencies: Herbalism kit
Languages: You learn either sylvan or undercommon.
Equipment: A component pouch, a set of pencils, a small knife, a 50-page sketchbook for your botanical illustrations, a set of traveler's clothes, a waterskin, and a pouch containing 10 gp.

Subfield

To determine your subfield of expertise, roll a d6 or choose from the options in the table below, or come up with your own.

d6 Subfield
1 Dendrologist (woody plants)
2 Horticulturalist (garden plants)
3 Pomologist (fruits and nuts)
4 Mycologist (fungi)
5 Bryology (mosses)
6 Agrostology (grasses)

Feature: Botanical geographer

Your familiarity with phytogeography grants you knowledge of the distribution of different types of plants and fungi (especially those that you study within your subfield) as well as their uses, be they medicinal, poisonous, alchemical components, or recreational. Your DM may rule that while you know where they should be, they may be rare, grow in a dangerous location, or otherwise be difficult to obtain.

Suggested Characteristics

You have spent much of your life studying plants or fungi, and may continue to do so as you begin adventuring. Plants come with a large variety of uses, so consider which of these uses is most important to you.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I like to stop and smell the roses. And the magnolias. And the lavender. And the peonies. And the–
2 I find it easier to talk to plants than to people.
3 I feel a personal connection to the often underappreciated poisonous and carnivorous plants.
4 I believe a little bit of kindness and a lot of patience can fix just about every problem.
5 I'm prone to rambling and over-explaining because I'm not used to speaking to beings who can speak back.
6 I enjoy extolling the virtues of a plant-based diet.
7 I frequently use recreational drugs and it is my favorite topic of conversation, no matter the setting.
8 I assign all my plants unique names, personalities, and voices.
d6 Ideal
1 Balance. People must learn to live in harmony with nature, or else will destroy it and then ourselves. (Neutral)
2 People. In a world filled with bountiful edible resources, there is no reason for anyone to be allowed to go hungry. (Good)
3 Consistency. Much like deciduous trees shedding their leaves, there is a correct, natural way in which things are meant to be done. (Lawful)
4 Change. Just as plants change with the seasons in order to survive, so must we. (Chaotic)
5 Nature. Those who would dare harm their environment deserve harm in return. (Evil)
6 Independence. The ability to live off the land it is an invaluable life skill everyone should have. (Any)
d6 Bond
1 I owe all my achievements to another botanist who taught me everything they know, and I hope to do the same for someone else one day.
2 I possess the last seeds of a nearly extinct medicinal plant that could save many lives.
3 I work to preserve and expand a seed bank of agricultural crops so as to help feed the hungry.
4 My life’s work is a series of guidebooks on my the plants in my subfield across different climate zones.
5 I’ve been searching my whole life for a legendary plant which may or may not exist.
6 I never feel more at ease than I do when in my own greenhouse, although those belonging to others are a close second.
d8 Flaw
1 I've nearly fallen off a cliff trying to obtain a clipping from a rare fern, and would do so again without hesitation.
2 I believe there is always a plant that can cure what ails you, and talk at length about it whenever anyone mentions feeling even slightly unwell.
3 I simply cannot abide by anyone, be they common folk or nobles, having non-native species in their gardens.
4 In hopes of reviving an endangered species, I frequently plant seedlings wherever I can, even on property that does not belong to me or where they may be unwanted.
5 I have cultivated numerous species known to be difficult to grow, and think extremely highly of myself for it.
6 I endorse the use of recreational plants and fungi for both enjoyment and stress relief, but often do so in inappropriate settings.
7 I believe using recreational drugs to be my most interesting personality trait.
8 I'm never willing to admit when I've forgotten the scientific name of a species, and will instead make something up on the spot.
