Physician Image

Whether through magics or knowledge of the natural world, you have dedicated yourself to ensuring the health of those around you. Through your dedication to your study, you have become and adept healer, able to aid those that others cannot. As a physician, you have an acute knowledge of medicines and physiology. Your studies may have taken you in several directions. You might have learned to identify plants and animals for their use in healing tinctures and balms as well as their potential to poison or cause disease. You might have developed a keen sense for reading your patients thoughts and feelings to better diagnose their ailments and provide better care and comfort.

People often turn to you for guidance, and your reputation as a caregiver precedes you, making you a core member of your community. Whether you like it or not, your advice is often sought for both personal matters and those impacting the whole community. What has called you away from your post and into the fray of adventure? Has someone taken your place while you are away or are your people without their healer?

Feature: Ease Your Mind

Your skills and experience as a physician have led your patients to develop a sense of trust with you. During and shortly after the time you are healing someone, they tend to be more open to sharing information and are less likely to meet a prying question with hostility, but might still resort to lying or avoiding a question to save face or to avoid self-incriminating. Additionally, folks are glad to have you and your skills around and are willing to provide you with room and board, within their means, if they require your services.

If you live in an urban area or under the jurisdiction of a political entity such as a kingdom or republic, you might belong to a College of Physicians who trains and regulates its members as well as provide them with assistance and materials if necessary. If you do not live in such an area where a College may reach or wish to practice your craft without the restrictions of such an organization, you may practice independent of a college. If you have taken the Court Physician variant, you must belong to a College of Physicians.

Variant Physician: Court Physician

You have been called to serve in the halls of royalty to treat the ailments of the most esteemed members of society. Your hands have given comfort and healing to lords and ladies, dukes and duchesses, perhaps even a royal family. Your role has given you an acute insight into the machinations of noble society—whose wife is whose mistress, who has attempted to poison each other. As such, the nobles treat you with a cautious respect, despite your lower station. You live comfortably well and are accustomed to the customs and oddities of high society. Being directly involved with the most important members of society, you must belong to a College of Physicians and account to them for your actions.

As with your lower physician counterparts, you have a very strong grasp of medicine, though you have not had much opportunity to explore the natural world for its risks and benefits to your medical practice. With this variant you must take insight as your second skill proficiency. The intensities of court intrigue, however, make a knowledge of poisons much more useful: you may gain proficiency with a poisoner's kit with this variant.

What has called you away from court? Has a noble or royal tasked you with a mission or have you left of your own volition? Were you allowed to or were you forced to resign your post?

Variant Feature: "Friends" in High Places

Even in other near kingdoms, you are known to the nobility, and for good reason. Your intimate knowledge of their affairs has made them hesitant to upset you and they are willing to provide you aid, within reason, to keep you in their good graces. As such, you can arrange an audience with a noble with little effort and know pertinent gossip you can ply to bolster your attempts to gain their assistance.
