Knights Templar Image

You have spent your life in the service of the Military Order of the Knights Templar representing a pantheon of gods. You devote your life to protect the faith and the faithful, whether from infernal evils or dangerous evildoers from this plane. Although your order consists of a lot of different individuals, regarding both skill sets and social status, the work towards a common goal unites you. You act as an intermediary between the realm of the holy and the mortal world, performing sacred rites and offering sacrifices in order to conduct worshipers into the presence of the divine. You are not necessarily a cleric - performing sacred rites is not the same thing as channeling divine power.

Even though you're not a subordinate to the crown, frequently pursuing the same goals usually results in riding into battle side by side, more often than not even spearheading their troops. Nevertheless the devotion to your divine task on occasion leads you to confront the crown to hold it accountable for their actions, if those are in contradiction to your faith and moral compass.

It can be used by every class, but especially if you play a warlock, druid or sorcerer you need to make sure that the source of your powers isn’t in contradiction with the faith of the order.

Feature: Protective Hand of the Gods

As a Knights Templar, you devote your life to protect faith and faithful and the people are grateful for that. Members of your order and those who are sympathetic to its aims provide you with shelter and succor. You can gain aid from temples and other religious communities of your deity or the ones allied to your order. Followers of your deity may provide free healing and care, should you be in need of it, though you are expected to provide for the material cost.

You command the respect of those who share your faith, and you can perform the religious ceremonies of your deity. While near your temple, you can call upon the priests for assistance, provided the assistance you ask for is not hazardous and you remain in good standing with your temple. Those who share your religion will support you (but only you) at a modest lifestyle.

Depending on your rank in the order and the significance of the situation you can ask allied forces for assistance. (ask your Dungeon Master when circumstances would allow you to do so)

Suggested Characteristics

Knights Templar are shaped by their devotion to their faith. When they join a adventure party it usually is for selfless reasons. Experiences in temples, parishes and battlefields provide an interesting perspective, their study of the history and tenets of their faith and their rigid discipline of military service leave their mark and can lead to different mannerisms, ideals and strong bonds. Their flaws might be an ideal or bond taken to an extreme or the shadows of war catching up to them leaving them scarred and vulnerable to fear, shame, and hatred.

Variant Knights Templar: Fallen Templar

Formerly you devoted your life to protect the faith and the faithful, following the commands, practices, and ideals of your order. After some unfortunate events, whether you witnessed a great betrayal, corruption by the darker powers, abandonment in a time of great need or maybe you became disillusioned with the faith, its' overall leadership or committed a terrible crime you had to abandon your order and were forced to flee.

After laying low or moving far away to let the dust settle and avoid efforts made by your former order to apprehend you, you try to reintegrate into society. Now for the sake of vengeance, duty, or appeasing a new master you follow your new ideals or methods determined to maybe expose wrongdoing in your former order, get revenge, reclaim what you lost, create your own order, or maybe something else entirely.

Variant Feature: Questionable Friends
The places that you regularly frequented are now mostly futile to visit. You need to seek refuge at places that may support your new faith, your new ways of doing things or that plainly don't care at all, such as a scholar's chambers, a temple, bandit hideout, or even your own outposts for your new brotherhood. Depending on the reason why you left the Knights Templar you have a hard time finding associates other than lowlifes and criminals. Thanks to your new "friends" you know the local messengers, corrupt caravan masters, and seedy sailors who can deliver messages for you. They may also provide some minimal assistance such as food, water, clothes, etc. if they can afford to do so. Places that do not support or recognize who you are or what you do will simply just turn you away.
Temples, facilities and members of your former order may try to capture you and to bring you to justice (justified or not).
