You were born and raised to fight the forces of Arcane, Holy, and Natural Magics, partly trained in their ways and in their words.
You might be a magic user yourself, wholly, halfly, thirdly, perhaps less so, or perhaps for all your learning you cannot cast at all.
Perhaps your order of mage slayers were formed from necessity, to fight a war against magic they could not hope to survive otherwise, or from paranoia, worried unjustly that magic might drive mad some of those who would weild it, or even built by your very enemies, realizing the great power they weild and wanting to ensure someone would be able to hold them accountable should they get careless or flippant with their spells.

- Equipment: A set of Common Clothes, something that can be used as a Spellcasting Focus for at least one Class, and 10 Gold Pieces in a Pouch.
As a Mage Slayer, you have access to the knowledge of other members of your order.
If your order is one whose members would not want their membership publicly known, you know a set of secret signs and passwords you can use to identify other members.
When trying to recall a piece of lore you do not know relating to magic or a well-known user of it, you can turn to fellow members for a few good places to venture to for learning the information.
You also have access to those who've studied various magic items. You can gain information on the necessary ingredients to Craft various magic items and what obstacles typically get in the way of obtaining them, and where there might be enough such ingredients to attract casters toward it.
When performing the Work Downtime Activity, in addition to the typical Skill Checks it allows, you can also choose to roll Intelligence (Arcana), Intelligence (Nature), or Intelligence (Religion), working to teach the next generation of Warborn Mage Slayers.
Suggested Characteristics
Many Warborn Mage Slayers find themselves ever-vigilant searching for the next magical threat, and oft past ones as well, as some foes refuse to stay down...
d8 | Personality Trait |
---|---|
1 | A simple song is all it takes to test my patience and draw my ire. |
2 | Faith is for fools, least I think so. |
3 | Mother Nature makes for a terrible parent, and only provides what you steal from her. |
4 | I'm not above going back on my word; I've seen the regret from a deal left unbroken. |
5 | I strive to be greater than my birthright has any right to be. |
6 | The tools of my enemies often work just as well in my hands as they do theirs. |
7 | I seek to speak and write clearly, so that no soul need spend hours struggling to understand me, nor tens of gold rephrasing what I say. |
8 | I've my own, humorous, names for various important magical terms, which, while understandable and typically not technically entirely incorrect, certainly show disrespect toward the practices said terms are vital for. |
d6 | Ideal |
---|---|
1 | Knowledge - Know thy enemy. (Neutral) |
2 | Accountability - Those with the power to bend existence to their will need kept well in check. (Lawful) |
3 | Secrecy - If our order's every secret is known to the diviners, then we will be wished away without a second thought. (Chaotic) |
4 | Humility - So long as one does not confuse ability with righteousness and sees those less able as still fully people, they have some good in them. (Good) |
5 | Denial - If only I have magic, then only I can use it. (Evil) |
6 | Protection - So long as I can guard against the harm magic can do, I will have done my duty well. (Any) |
d6 | Bond |
---|---|
1 | A powerful caster took one of my immediate relatives' lives in cold blood, or at least in what I say was cold blood. |
2 | A mentor of mine who paid special attention to me was placed under a Charm I am yet to find a way to break, or was raised as an undead servant that I've not yet found a way to reverse. |
3 | A former classmate and sibling of mine turned against the order, and now weilds magic for heinous and nefarious purposes. |
4 | A long lived caster has harassed my order, my family, for longer than any member's living memory. |
5 | A strange, not entirely sane individial claims to have cursed me. Nothing has happened yet, but I am unsure they've realized, and unsure if anything is still yet to come. |
6 | My mother had multiple children at one time, I myeself one. Whether I've one or many such siblings, they are Warborn as I, even any who refused the life they had been born for. |
d6 | Flaw |
---|---|
1 | I dare not use the magic of one who is not Warborn, no matter how helpful or insignificant. |
2 | I am too quick to reject magic solutions and too slow to trust those who cast responsibly. |
3 | No matter how much I study, one specific kind of magic eternally confounds me to no end! |
4 | I oft blame mundane problems on magic forces. |
5 | Even the simplest of Cantrips are as immense as Wish to me. |
6 | My especially strict upbringing beat the ability to entirely let my guard down right out of me, and the stress I still force myself through has not been easy on me. |
