The House of the Silver Shield began in the Free Cities as a guild dedicated towards hunting dangerous beasts and rampaging monsters for coin. As word of their services spread, they rapidly gained renown and soon expanded throughout the free-cities. Today a guild hall can be found in nearly every major city on the Balad-Mun subcontinent. Not everybody can afford the services of the Silver Shield, but when a contract is taken out, it is always fulfilled.
You are a Hunter of the Silver Shield. You learned your skills as an apprentice to a master hunter who was your guild sponsor until you became skilled enough to become a Hunter in your own right.
- Skill Proficiencies: Survival, Nature
- Tool Proficiencies: Alchemist's tools and Leatherworker’s tools
- Equipment: Alchemist's supplies, Leatherworker’s tools, a silver shield emblem (worn as a pin or a necklace), a trophy from a previous kill (choose one or roll on the trophies table in this background), a set of traveler’s clothes, and a pouch containing 15 gp.
There are few things as important in the life of a Hunter as their first truly dangerous kill. Many hunters take a new name from the kill, and most keep a trophy with them to remind them of the moment they first became a true hunter. Choose a trophy from a dangerous beast or monster, or roll on the Trophy table.

As a member of the House of the Silver Shield, you have the support and backing of your guild wherever you would go, as long as you've paid your dues. You can show you Silver Shield emblem in any settlement on the Balad'Mun sub-continent and expect to be treated with a modicum of respect. In many small settlements, you will find yourself generously offered room and board, though you may be asked to deal with a problem they are facing. In any city of 2,000 or more you can expect to find a guild hall where you will be provided with lodging and food, and a central place to meet with other members of your profession. This can be a good place to meet potential patrons, allies, or hirelings, and the Shield Quartermaster will always offer you a fair price for any alchemical substances, hides, or body parts that you have preserved from your quarry. In addition, you can often purchase rare alchemical ingredients from a Shield Quartermaster, where you might not be able to otherwise.
The Silver Shield wields tremendous political power across the sub-continent. In most places, if you are accused of a crime, the guild will support you if a good case can be made for your innocence or ifa good argument can be made to justify the crime. You can gain access to powerful political figures through the guild, as well as through the guild's associated organizations: The houses of the Ebon Shield and the Crimson Shield. Using such connections may require significant donations to the local chapter or performing favors for the hall masters.
Each Guild hall is sovereign in their area, but they all communicate with each other. When you enter the domain of a new Shield Hall, you are expected to report so they can update their ledger of members and send notices to the other halls that you are currently working in their area. Occasionally a Shield Master may ask you to take a job. You can refuse, but doing so may result in a loss of standing.
Membership in the House of the Silver Shield is not free. You must pay dues of 5 gp per month to the guild. This can be paid with coin, or by providing hunt based goods (hides, meat, organs, alchemical ingredients, etc.) to the local quartermaster.
Suggested Characteristics
As a member of the shield, you are among the best hunters in the world. Hunters know the value of patience, timing, and preparation, but that doesn't mean they are slow to act. Whether they hunt for thrill, for honor, for pride, or for coin, they throw themselves between the dangers of the wild and the civilized world.
