The Beholder Image

you are the beholder, you have the knowledge  from the days of yore whether that would be the ancient sacred knowledge from the fae or from another celestial entity,  you could have travelled to the world of the faewild and they taught you their knowledge and stories, or maybe you studied, maybe you are a wizard and whilst reading manuscripts to enhance your arcane abilities you stumbled across ancient texts, teaching you about the world beyond the region of new, either way, you have information of practices and history from the days of old. this benefits you if you are any kind of spell caster as it gives you one more spell slot and you know five spells, correlating to the knowledge that you have. for example if you travelled to the land of the fae you would be skilled in the arcane practice of nature. if you are a cleric your spirit guardians will most likely be nymphs or nature sprites.  being the beholder also makes it so you have the choice, once per long rest to channel the knowledge and power from the fae to add an extra d4 of damage. this will increase at level 10 to a d6, level 15 to a d8 and finally at level 20 to  a d12.

Variant the beholder: "the protector"

the protector sworn their life to the fae/ celestials, as a reword the fae taught them spells so that they can continue to protect them. even if you are not a spellcaster you still can wield magic powerful enough to cast  these few spells. the protector is a background made for the fighting classes who also want the thrill of mystery and magic. this background is perfect for fighters, barbarians and monks. as the protector you also have the faes' blessing, meaning that because you protect them they not only gave you their magic but you are blessed. you can add a d4 to any of your rolls once per short rest.

Variant Feature: the faewielder

as the faewielder your magic is fueled by those of fae kind. you possess their magic and knowledge. you probably grew up near nature where the fae and nymphs first approached you. you where kind to them, in return for your kindness they offered you magic. your arcane abilities revolve around nature and the forests where the fae mainly live. they would have shown you their caverns of mystery and wonder. as the faewielder you have an extended life span, regardless of your species and race you will probably live to be around 900 to 1000 years old, which exceeds the lifespan of any humanoid mortal species known in all of the seven regions of Aesla. they are known and trusted by the royalty that govern and lead the fae. the have to maintain this trust to keep their magic as they can easily take it away.
