You are a unique individual, for you've had the opportunity to travel to the Astral Plane more than once. Various favors granted to you have allowed you to sail through and become familiar with various sections of the Astral Plane and all of its unending majesty. You've seen some crazy things: notable amounts of ancient corpses, old treasures, and relics that often appear here among the floating rock. You began to ask yourself...would people pay for these to be brought back to other planes?
Through your past expertise, your skills of identifying significant missing items has been good enough so far to acquire yourself a small ship. This Astral Caravel has enough supplies for a moderate amount of cargo, only needing to offload some of the full stock to Gith outposts, or Pirate ships on your return in order to sail back comfortably. This job has kept you afloat long enough to gain standing with various organizations. At your DM's discretion, decide your notoriety/wealth level at the start of your adventure.
Someone in this line of work can only dream of making a large discovery. You may not be discovering lost tombs, gods, or legendary weapons all the time, but it makes a modest wage. Is it worth it? Who knows. The excitement of exploration and discovery drives you to get out on a ship to sail the stars.
- Skill Proficiencies: Investigation, Perception
- Tool Proficiencies: Vehicles (Sea/Air), Navigator's Tools
- Equipment: A block and tackle, grappling hook, a spyglass, traveler's clothing, and a pouch containing 15 gp
Determine your starting notoriety using this table; use a d6 or choose one if preferred.
d6 | Standing |
---|---|
1 | I have made a moderately important discovery and am known by name in certain cities or academic groups; a tablet of a dead language, bones of a historical figure, or the hint of a larger discovery |
2 | The people I sell to know me well, and treat me like family. They work to help me when they can. |
3 | I prefer working alone, taking longer or slower trips in order to protect myself and my goods. Because of this, I have not made much, but am satisfied with my work. |
4 | I have been brought under the wing of a larger Astral Fleet, and work with the captain (as friends or business partners) to bring in riches for the crew. |
5 | I have a tense relationship with a local band of pirates who work to track me down. I often need to lay low in larger clusters of activity. |
6 | I assume all civilizations that settle here have already found something important; I make attempts to infiltrate their archives and strongholds to find information and objects of importance. |
When you or your Astral Ship are in peril, you can use a supply of sending stones to contact a nearby vessel to aid you. You might sail on a ship you've previously served on, or another ship you have good relations with. Because you're calling in a favor, you can't be certain of a schedule or route that will meet your every need. Your DM will determine how long it takes to get where you need to go. In return for your free passage, you and your companions are expected to assist the crew during the voyage.
